The factors which contribute to the irreversible denaturation of soluble enzymes(aggregation, autolysis, etc.) are different from the factors likely to be responsible for irreversible denaturation of proteins... As a rule, denaturation of enzymes induced by elevated temperature, extreme pH values, or organic solvents can only be irreversible as a result of secondary processes, e. g., aggregation, chemical modification of functional groups, autolysis or degradation induced by admixtures of other enzymes, or breakage of the native disulphide bonds.... It is likely that the denatured immobilized enzyme may adopt an incorrect conformation upon removal of the denaturing conditions. In these circumstances it is proposed that subsequent denaturation and renaturation under controlled conditions may permit the immobilized enzyme to refold and renature to the correct conformation.

Nuisance particulates is a term used by the ACGIH to describe airborne materials(solids and liquids) which have little harmful effect on the lungs and do not produce significant disease or harmful effects when exposures are kept under reasonable control. Nuisance particulates may also be called nuisance dusts. High levels of nuisance particulates in the air may reduce visibility and can get into the eyes, ears and nose. Removal of this material by washing or rubbing may cause irritation.

"Nuisance particulates" is not a true synonym of "nuisance dusts" but an explanatory term, since "dusts" is a term applied to solid particles larger than colloidal that are capable of temporary suspension in air. "Particulates" and "dusts" are most often used in the plural form.

What makes automatic molding automatic is the mold. There are a number of requirements for automatic molding. The machine must be capable of consistent, repetitive action. The mold must clear itself automatically. This means that all the parts have to be ejected using a runnerless mold, or that the runner and the parts have to be ejected in a conventional mold. There may be some method for assisting in the removal of the pieces, usually in the form of a wiper mechanism, air blast, or robot. All machines used automatically must have a low-pressure closing system to prevent the machine from closing under full pressure if there is any obstruction between the dies. The machine shuts itself off and/or an alarm is sounded. Automatic molding does not necessarily eliminate the operator. Many times, an operator is present to pack the parts and perform secondary operations. Automatic molding gives a better quality piece and more rapid cycle. In automatic molding an experienced person usually attends several machines. Unless the powder feed and part removal are automated, this person takes care of those operations.

Lignin Preserving or Lignin Removal? Two approaches are used in the chemical bleaching of pulps. One approach is to utilize chemicals that selectively destroy some of the chromophoric groups, but do not materially attack lignin. The other approach is to almost totally remove residual lignin. The selective approach(often referred to as "brightening" to distinguish it from true bleaching) is used for high-yield pulps with significant lignin content. This methodology is limited in many cases to achieving brightness values in the 70's; but under favorable circumstances, values above 80 can be obtained. Although the brightness gains can be substantial, no known method of selective brightening produces a permanent effect; exposure to light and atmospheric oxygen causes the lignin to rapidly discolor, as can be readily observed with old newspapers.

Research is under way to develop an automatic or self-fueling wood furnace. This system would burn either wood chips, sawdust or densified wood pellets of uniform size. Similar to automatic coal-burning systems, these automatic wood furnaces would draw wood fuel from a storage bin through a motorized fuel auger. Biological phosphorus removal is based on the phenomenon called "luxury uptake. "This effect is observed when certain microorganisms, primarily acinetobacter, are subject to anaerobic conditions, followed by aerobic conditions. Under anaerobic conditions, acinetobacter experience a stress due to a lack of oxygen. They release phosphorus and take on soluble COD. In the subsequent aerobic zone, the same microbes take on additional phosphorus to replenish the energy resources. In what may be interpreted as a "preventive measure, "the microbes take on 2. 5 times more phosphorus than required for biosynthesis. The microbes effectively prepare themselves for future stress situations(i. e., low O2 concentrations) by storing more-than-normal amounts of phosphorus in the form of polyphosphates as an energy source.
