The basic mechanism of a hovercraft is very simple : there's an engine(diesel or gasoline) that powers both a large central fan, pointing downward, and one or more other fans pointing backward. The central fan creates the lift that holds the craft above the waves; the other fans propel the craft backward, forward, or to the side. A rubber skirt(with or without fingers) traps a cushion of air under the craft. 2, record 1, English, - finger

Canadian Origin Stories-The Birth of Good and Evil. The story of Sky Woman's descent to earth continues with the birth of Sky Woman's daughter. Sky Woman's daughter gives birth to twin sons. Even prior to their birth, these two sons are in conflict. The good twin is born in the natural way, while his evil brother, jealous of his sibling's being born first, pushes himself out his mother's side. The birth of the twins marks the beginning of the battle of good and evil on earth. The brothers grow quickly and begin to fill the world with their creations. One creates all that is good and useful to humans, while the other is destructive, and creates all that is bad. Eventually the good twin defeats his evil brother, and banishes him to a pit under the earth. From this pit the evil twin sends emissaries that continue to bring evil into the world.

The second book of the set of works by the CIDECT [Committee International for the Development and the Study of Tubular construction] under the general title "Construction with Hollow Steel Sections" is dedicated to phenomena of instability : buckling, distortion, spreading. Because of the shape of its section and the particularly favourable distribution of matter in the straight section, a hollow profile, of circular or rectangular shape, behaves distinctly better than an open profile section under the demands of compression. In remaining within the limits of the relation of the diameter or the width of side divided by the thickness of partition, given in this dimensioning guide, the local hollow profile distortion can be disregarded. On the other hand, the resistance to spreading is, in practice, not verified because hollow profiles possess a distinctly larger polar rigidity than open section profiles. 1, record 15, English, - open%20section%20profile

2, record 15, French, - profil%20ouvert

Kyphoplasty is a newer treatment for patients immobilized by the painful vertebral body compression fractures associated with osteoporosis. Like vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can alleviate up to 90% of the pain caused by compression fractures. In addition to relieving pain, kyphoplasty can also stabilize the fracture, restore height, and reduce deformity.... Kyphoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia. Using image guidance x-rays, two small incisions are made and a probe is placed into the vertebral space where the fracture is located. The bone is drilled and a balloon, called a bone tamp, is inserted on each side. These balloons are then inflated with contrast medium(to be seen using image guidance x-rays) until they expand to the desired height and removed. The balloon does not remain in the patient. It simply creates a cavity for the cement and also helps expand the compressed bone. The spaces created by the balloons are then filled with PMMA [poly(methyl methacrylate) ], the same orthopaedic cement used in vertebroplasty, binding the fracture. The cement hardens quickly, providing strength and stability to the vertebra, restoring height, and relieving pain. 1, record 40, English, - kyphoplasty

1, record 40, French, - cyphoplastie

The new methodology is creating powerful incentives for encouraging banks to improve their risk management-for the first time, successful efforts by banks to control market risk will be directly rewarded with a lower regulatory capital ratio. Under the earlier approach-still in use for credit risk-which required banks to maintain prudential ratios, the banks’ regulatory capital requirements were largely determined by the side of their asset and lialibity positions rather than by their risk exposures. There was only a limited possibility of reducing regulatory capital by reducing risk through diversification and hedging. 2, record 41, English, - regulatory%20capital

Differential adjustment : An aircraft has its wing defined as a wing-like body with a tangential flow rotor in the leading edge. A shroud, under the lower part of the tangential flow rotor, terminates in at least one movable flap defining a lift-generating lip when the rotor is rotating such that the upper part of the rotor, projecting above the level of the upper surface of the wing-like body, is moving rearwardly. Differential adjustment of the flaps in the wings to either side of an aircraft centerline allows directional control and control of banking of the aircraft. 2, record 49, English, - differentially%20adjust

RMU : Removal Unit. The Marrakesh Accords introduced the RMU as part of a Party's assigned amount generated from domestic sinks activities within Annex 1. Under the [Kyoto] Protocol, accounting for carbon sequestration activities is handled on the assigned amount side of the ledger rather than the inventory side. All magnetic objects produce invisible lines of force that extend between the poles of the object. An easy way to visualize this is to spread iron filings on a sheet of paper and place a bar magnet under the paper. The iron filings will arrange themselves around the magnet and along the magnetic field lines. In the simplest terms, Earth can be thought of as a dipole(2-pole) magnet. Magnetic field lines radiate between Earth's north and south magnetic poles just as they do between the poles of a bar magnet. Charged particles become trapped on these field lines(just as the iron filings are trapped), forming the magnetosphere. Earth's magnetic field lines are not as symmetrical as those of the bar magnet. The impact of the solar wind causes the lines facing sunward to compress, while the field lines facing away from the Sun stream back to form Earth's magnetotail. The magnetosphere extends into the vacuum of space from approximately 80 to 60, 000 kilometers(50 to 37, 280 miles) on the side toward the Sun, and trails out more than 300, 000 kilometers(186, 500 miles) away from the Sun. 4, record 66, English, - Earth%26rsquo%3Bs%20magnetic%20field

RAGA January 1981, 61. Track Circuit Conductor Retainer Clip : Bootleg and crossbonds often become damaged due to the track circuit conductor becoming dislodged from the rail and moving into the path of passing trains. To prevent this, a retaining clip has been developed which holds the track circuit conductor against the contour of the rail. Called a track circuit retainer, the clip will fit most sizes of rail and will accommodate either 4-76 mm bare or insulated strand, or 7-94 mm bare bond strand. It can be used with welded and plug bonds attached to the rail heads or webs. The clip comprises two strips of metal joined by two semi-circular holders through which the conductor passes. The clip is located under the rail and bent round to the opposite side, so that there is a holder above and below the rail bottom, so keeping the conductor in place. 1, record 76, English, - track%20circuit%20retainer

Soil Retention Tests. One variation of this test is directed toward the use of geotextiles as underwater silt curtains. The test device consists of two rectangular tanks which are placed end to end with slide gates facing one another. Between these two slide gates is the fabric specimen under test. The upstream tank(with the slide gate closed) is now filled with water that has a known amount of silt uniformly mixed in it. The gate valve at the exit end of the downstream tank is opened. The test begins by lifting up the slide gates on each side of the fabric and allowing the(turbid) water to pass through the fabric, which is acting as a submerged soil filter...
