CONT

Psychological thermogenesis : The psychological state may influence energy expenditure, as anxiety(or emotional state), anticipation, and acute stress stimulate adrenaline secretion, leading to increased heat production. For example, the energy cost of sitting at ease and sitting playing chess may differ by as much as two-fold—a difference that cannot entirely be attributed to muscular movement. Furthermore, the increase in energy expenditure when pilots are under air traffic control(or take off) is inversely related to their level of experience.

Subject field(s)
  • Human Behaviour
DEF

The state of limiting, moderating, restricting or keeping under control the following elements : emotions, anger, spending, vices, etc.

OBS

Caution: "restraint" and "constraint" are only synonyms if they are used figuratively to denote the means of preventing one from doing something, such as in the expressions "social constraints" or "social restraints". In other instances, because of the quirks of usage, they cannot be used interchangeably. "Restraint", in particular, is a highly polysemous term. It can denote a device that restricts movement (= restraining device); it can denote the control over one’s expression, emotions or urges, i.e. moderation (DE: Mäßigung) in addition to the figurative definition already cited above. "Constraint" is strictly an abstract term and can have the same figurative meaning as "restraint" cited above or it can have the slightly stronger meaning of repressing (and not simply controlling) one’s own feelings, behavior, or actions.

The state of an economy in which industry is largely under foreign control, and hence fails to carry out a number of its usual functions.

This results in inadequate growth, employment, and trade. Many of the essential functions of individual firms, such as research and development, industrial design, marketing, investment planning, and corporate finance and strategy, are performed by their foreign parents rather than by the subsidiaries in a country such as Canada. Such a situation means that native skills will not be developed fully, and that fewer of the spin-off industries that result from these skills and activities will be created.

L'existence de moyens de production dans divers pays accroît la puissance et la souplesse de l'entreprise multinationale [...] dans ses rapports avec le gouvernement canadien. Elle aggrave également le problème du démembrement en réduisant la tendance de l'entreprise multinationale [...] à implanter davantage d'activités au Canada surtout du fait que d'autres gouvernements interviennent pour contrôler les entreprises appartenant à des non-résidents qui se trouvent sur leur territoire. The Marshall Plan, known officially following its enactment as the European Recovery Program(ERP), was the primary plan of the United States to promote the recovery of Europe and to advance American foreign and domestic economic policies after World War II. The initiative was named for United States Secretary of State George Marshall and was largely the creation of State Department officials, especially William L. Clayton and George F. Kennan. The reconstruction plan was developed at a meeting of the participating European States in July 1947. The Soviet Union and the states of Eastern Europe were invited, but Stalin saw the plan as a threat and did not allow the participation of any countries under Soviet control. The plan was in operation for four fiscal years beginning in July 1947.

N. Chomsky describes his pursuit in theoretical terms as a search for universal grammar(or U. G.) U. G. is genetically determined at its initial state(in the organism) and is specified, sharpened, articulated, and refines under conditions set by experience, to yield the particular grammars found in specific groups of individuals(1980, p. 234). A theory of universal grammar is said to be an explanatory theory. To know a language is to be in a certain state of mind/brain : this state is described by a core grammar which consists of certain principles of universal grammar, which are to be discovered by linguists. Thus, Chomsky takes a purely realistic stance : language knowledge is a series of states in the brain... Now he has come to the conclusion that it is more productive to speak of various principles that govern language use. These principles begin in human biology. They determine the kinds of grammar that are available in principle(Chomsky 1979). The principles of U. G. are various subsystems, which go by names like binding theory, control theory, government, theta theory, and the like-each of which features a limited degree of parametric variation.
