CONT

There are numerous sections capped with iron crusts(cuirasses)... The explanation still persists that the tabular crusts at the top of the profiles were formed by the vertical rise of the iron sesquioxides and by hardening under the rays of sun. In reality, the iron oxides do not migrate vertically from the bottom to the top of the profiles, and the crust is not formed at the soil-atmosphere interface. The latter was exposed by erosion after it has developed within a pedological profile under a forest landscape.

DEF

An adhered waterproof membrane installed under shingled roofing, around skylights or along eaves to avoid leaks caused by ice dams and icicles.

CONT

When snow and ice melt, trapped water can infiltrate to damage the roof deck and interior. Ice Guard [trademark] is installed under shingled roofing to prevent water damage from ice dams. ... Applied under the shingles, Ice Guard forms a long-lasting waterproof barrier, unlike normal shingle underlayment. Ice Guard is warranted to protect against water leakage, where it has been applied, for the warranted life of the new shingled roof.

OBS

Icicles and ice dams. An adhered waterproof membrane is needed under steep roofing such as shingles at valleys, around skylights and other large penetrations, and along eaves to avoid leaks when icings back up water in these places.

OBS

An ice dam is a build up of ice and water that works its way under shingles/shakes. When snow/ice from the peak melts(caused by warm spots in the attic or the sun), water slowly runs down the roof.... Most roofs have a single layer of underlayment(i. e. builder's felt) that protects against moisture penetration and in many northern states an extra waterproofing membrane is required by building codes.

All magnetic objects produce invisible lines of force that extend between the poles of the object. An easy way to visualize this is to spread iron filings on a sheet of paper and place a bar magnet under the paper. The iron filings will arrange themselves around the magnet and along the magnetic field lines. In the simplest terms, Earth can be thought of as a dipole(2-pole) magnet. Magnetic field lines radiate between Earth's north and south magnetic poles just as they do between the poles of a bar magnet. Charged particles become trapped on these field lines(just as the iron filings are trapped), forming the magnetosphere. Earth's magnetic field lines are not as symmetrical as those of the bar magnet. The impact of the solar wind causes the lines facing sunward to compress, while the field lines facing away from the Sun stream back to form Earth's magnetotail. The magnetosphere extends into the vacuum of space from approximately 80 to 60, 000 kilometers(50 to 37, 280 miles) on the side toward the Sun, and trails out more than 300, 000 kilometers(186, 500 miles) away from the Sun.

Name given to the parhelia, paranthelia or the anthelion when they are particularly bright.

CONT

A halo occurs when the light from the sun or the moon is refracted and reflected by ice crystals in the atmosphere... Under certain circumstances a second, or outer, halo appears, which is fainter than the inner one. At times white or colored luminous arcs are also seen lying somewhat parallel to the horizon and passing through the source of light, called mock suns, parhelia, or sun dogs for the sun, and paraselenae for the moon. A single mock sun, the anthelion, directly opposite the sun, may be added.

CONT

A sundog is a brightly colored spot that appears to the right or left of the sun. Sundogs form when the sun is near the horizon and the sunlight is refracted (bent) by hexagonal, plate-like ice crystals floating horizontally in the air. Sundogs are brightest in winter because ice crystals are more common, but can be seen at any time. Sundogs are also known as mock suns or parhelia.
