UNDER WATER WEIGHT [18 records]

Record 1 2024-08-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ship and Boat Parts
  • Propulsion of Water-Craft
CONT

The foil is shaped in such a way that it generates lift as water flows over and under it. This lift counteracts the weight of the vessel, reducing the amount of hull surface area in contact with the water. As a result, hydrofoils decrease hydrodynamic drag, allowing the vessel to glide more efficiently through the water.

Key term(s)
  • hydro foil
  • hydro-foil

  • Propulsion des bateaux
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Loads and Weights (Transport.)
  • Water Transport
CONT

Ballast water is fresh or saltwater held in the ballast tanks and cargo holds of ships. It is used to provide stability and maneuverability during a voyage when ships are not carrying cargo, not carrying heavy enough cargo, or when more stability is required due to rough seas. Ballast water may also be used to add weight so that a ship sinks low enough in the water to pass under bridges and other structures.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Poids et charges (Transports)
  • Transport par eau
CONT

Les navires doivent accroître leur charge d'eau de ballast pour s'enfoncer davantage dans l'eau durant les périodes de tempête ou lorsqu'ils doivent passer sous un pont.

Record 4 2014-05-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Dams and Causeways
CONT

There are a large number of peat dikes in the Netherlands. The humidity level of the peat determines the sturdiness and stability of such a dike. If a peat dike is too wet, it can collapse under its own weight. In a peat dike that is too dry, there is a risk of erosion and soil compaction. If the peat dries out completely, it even becomes water resistant and does not absorb water anymore at all.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Barrages et chaussées
CONT

Sur les terrains en forte pente (plus de 2 %), il est nécessaire dans un premier temps de stabiliser le terrain en aménageant des digues de tourbe, afin de limiter l'érosion et de réhumidifier le terrain.

DEF

A landslide that is caused when a mass of rock becomes saturated with water and slides downward.

CONT

When the soil and earthy material on a steep slope become charged with water, their weight is greatly increased. At the same time the water makes them more mobile. Under these circumstances the material sometimes slides down the slopes. Such movements are known as slumping or sliding. If the movement is on a large scale, it is a landslide.

DEF

A crest gate the face of which is a section of cylinder that rotates about a horizontal axis downstream from the gate.

CONT

The spillway is part of the central section of the main dam. It has six gated bays, each 50 feet wide. Six radial arm gates (tainter gates) control spillway discharge. Each radial arm gate is 50 feet wide by 25.24 feet high.

OBS

The water pressure against the gate is concentrated in the axis; this arrangement reduces friction in raising and lowering the gate. A seal is placed along the sides and bottom of the gate face for watertightness. The gate is raised and lowered by winches or hoists attached to cables or chains fastened to the bottom edge of the gate and lying against its water face; this allows a vertical lifting force to be applied. It can be closed under its own weight.

tainter gate: formerly called canal lock.

A small seepage around the packing gland is desirable for lubrication of the piston and should not be confused with a leak at this point. In case of leakage at the packing gland as evidenced by excessive fluid seepage or by air bubbles when soapy water is applied, the packing nut should be tightened firmly but not excessively. However, before tightening air pressure must be released, weight of airplane removed from the strut, and all safeties removed from the packing nut. The packing cannot be tightened properly under pressure, and if normal tightening does not stop the leakage, the packing must be replaced.
