Most of the experiments are contained in racks, about the size of a side-by-side refrigerator, inside the Spacelab module. A special fixture, called the Unique Support Structure, has been placed in Columbia's cargo bay. Astronomy, Earth-observing instruments and materials which require direct exposure to space are mounted to this structure.

Subject field(s)
  • Spacecraft
CONT

The Payload Carriers Team is responsible for MSFC' s [Marshall Space Flight Center] Payload Carriers which is made up of two type of carriers : the Spacelab Logistics Pallet(SLP) and the Multi-Purpose Equipment Support Structure(MPESS). The Payload Carriers "bridge the gap" in payload accommodations available in the Space Shuttle's Payload Bay by providing unique structural, power, data and thermal resources to a variety of payloads. These carriers are designed to transport items safely through the rigors of high acceleration Shuttle launch and the vacuum of space while providing the flexibility to allow the Shuttle to minimize the mass transported to earth orbit.

OBS

Spacelab logistics pallet; SLP: term and abbreviation officially approved by the International Space Station official approval Group (ISSOAG).

... Doug Engelbart started work in 1962 on his Augment project, developing computer tools to augment human capabilities and productivity. This project was the first major work in areas like office automation and text processing.... One part of the augment project was NLS(for oN-Line System), which had several hypertext features even though it was not developed as a hypertext system. During the augment project, the researchers stored all their papers, reports, and memos in a shared "journal" facility that enabled them to include cross-references to other work in their own writings. This journal grew to over 100, 000 items and is still unique as a hypertext structure for support of real work over an extended time.

... Douglas Engelbart ....
