University of the Arctic was formally launched in Rovaniemi, Finland in June 2001. More than 25 Canadian institutions participate in the U Arctic. [It is] funded by governments and individual educational institutions... uses both distance delivery and classroom settings to deliver courses. [This] "university without walls" is a partnership of northern colleges, universities, Indigenous organizations, and governments. It has been designed to address the educational and training needs of northern peoples.. It combines the most advanced developments in the field of distance education with traditional knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation among the Indigenous peoples of the Arctic. The Cambridge Arctic Shelf Programme(CASP) is an independent, non-profit-making geological research organization based in the University of Cambridge. It originated in 1948 as Cambridge Spitsbergen Expeditions, and was incorporated as CASP in 1975. Initially, support came from companies with an interest in Svalbard and the Barents Shelf. Environment Canada offers High Arctic accommodation, facilities and services to support graduate students enrolled in master's or doctoral studies at a Canadian university. Preference is given to environmental research proposals in the physical and/or biological sciences for which a location at a High Arctic weather station at Eureka is demonstrably advantageous. Opportunities are not confined to students engaged in weather-related studies. Arctic Ocean Buoy Program was established by the Polar Science Center, University of Washington, in 1978 to support the Global Weather Experiment. Operations began in early 1979 and continued through 1990 with funding from various agencies.
