sonde planétaire : La première sonde planétaire envoyée avec succès vers Mars fut Mariner 4 des États-Unis, lancée le 28 novembre 1964. Au mois de juillet suivant, Mariner 4 passa au large de la planète rouge, à 9 846 km de la surface. La sonde transmit 22 gros plans de Mars, qui confirmèrent pour la première fois l'existence de cratères à sa surface.
