English

Subject field(s)
  • Spacecraft
  • Collaboration with WIPO
CONT

Robotic spacecraft are sent to some of the most inhospitable places in the solar system to explore where humans cannot. These spacecraft rely on power systems that allow them to operate in extreme environments and perform their mission to advance scientific knowledge with delayed and only periodic input from the operations teams on Earth.

OBS

robotic spacecraft; uncrewed spacecraft; robotic space vehicle; uninhabited spacecraft; uncrewed space vehicle; uninhabited space vehicle; robotic space craft; uncrewed space craft; unmanned spacecraft; unmanned space vehicle; unmanned space craft : Although the designations "spacecraft, ""space craft" and "space vehicle" have slightly different meanings, they are used interchangeably in this context.

OBS

unmanned spacecraft: designation officially approved by the International Space Station Terminology Approval Group (ISSTAG).

OBS

robotic spacecraft; uncrewed spacecraft; robotic space vehicle; uninhabited spacecraft; uncrewed space vehicle; uninhabited space vehicle; robotic space craft; uncrewed space craft; unmanned spacecraft; unmanned space vehicle; unmanned space craft : designations validated by a subject-matter expert from the Canadian Space Agency.

CONT

During the Shuttle's approach and departure from Mir, new ESA-developed technology to be used in an automated rendez-vous and docking was successfully tested. Data from the experiment will help European engineers develop technology for ESA's [European Space Agency] unmanned Automated Transfer Vehicle(ATV) which will approach and depart the International Space Station on regular supply missions early in the next century.

  • Launchers (Astronautics)
CONT

ESA's Atmospheric Reentry Demonstrator(ARD) is a major step towards developing and operating space transportation vehicles that can return to Earth, whether carrying payloads or people. For the first time, Europe will fly a complete space mission-launching a vehicle into space and recovering it safely. The ARD is an unmanned, 3-axis stabilised automatic capsule that will be launched on top of an Ariane-5 from the European space port at the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana.

CONT

CONT

In 1979, Boeing and the US Air Force Rocket Propulsion Laboratory proposed a small unmanned "Air-Launched Sortie Vehicle", ALSV consisting of a reusable spaceplane and a huge expendable propellant tank. The vehicle could overfly any point on Earth within 90 minutes of the launch order and also perform other military missions such as satellite inspection. It then returns to a military airbase and lands horizontally like the Space Shuttle.
