The Automated Transfer Vehicle(ATV) is a European cargo supply vehicle to be used for the International Space Station(ISS). It will be launched by an Ariane-5 Rocket from Kourou in French Guiana. The first ATV is scheduled to be launched to the ISS in 2003. The European Space Agency(ESA) is to launch 9 Ariane-5's between 2003 and 2014 carrying ATV's. Each 20 tonne ATV will be placed in 300 km, 51. 6 degrees orbit and will then manoeuvre to rendezvous and dock with the ISS. The ATV will provide unpressurized cargo, including propellant and cargo stored in its pressurized compartment including payloads and experiments. The ATV will also provide an orbital reboosting capability for the ISS and will later be filled with trash and waste which will be disposed of during a controlled, destructive re-entry.

The ATV can carry a total cargo of up to 9 t which can consist of: up to 5.5 t of dry cargo (re-supply goods, scientific payload, etc.) up to 840 kg of water and gas up to 860 kg of propellant for refueling the Station up to 4 t of propellant for the "reboost" manoeuvre.

The Multi-Purpose Experiment Support Structure... is a general purpose, unpressurized payload mounting structure for use in a mixed cargo mode with the Space Transportation System(STS) Orbiter. In the mixed cargo mode, two or more elements share the Orbiter payload bay on the same flight. Payload bay space and standard Orbiter services are divided into quarters to facilitate accommodation of the mixed cargo. Allocations for the MPESS and payload are based on one quarter of the payload bay capabilities.

The ULC-Unpressurized Logistics Container... is an external equipment serving as means of transportation and cargo storage for the ISS [International Space Station]. It will have a total operation life of 10 years with intervals of no more than five years in orbit. The unpressurized cargo to be transported on the ULC will use an interface unit called CHIA [Cargo Handling Interface Assembly] whose function is to provide electrical and mechanical interfaces between the cargo and the ULC. Brazil will supply four flight units of this equipment.

Express Pallet. The ExPS is an unpressurized external equipment which, by means of adapter mechanisms, will support external payloads. Each ExPS will accommodate up to six payloads of up to 225 kg for a total launch of 1, 36 tons. For each one of them it will be supplied power and data. The adapters will be fully compatible with external robotics operations(EVR) and with crew external activities(EVA). The full up ExPS will be compatible with robotics operations for removal from orbiter cargo bay and assembly in the ISS truss. The Automated transfer Vehicle(ATV) is the European Transportation system supporting the International Space Station. A detailed analytical cargo accommodation for each single cargo has to be performed in order to meet the NASA plan(Cargo Manifest). From the cargo accommodation point of view, the ATV consists of an unpressurized module and a pressurized module. Accommodation rules are given for the unpressurized, pressurized and overall cargo.
