Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The process of scanning an image can make the image appear soft; high-end drum scanners perform unsharp masking automatically to create a sharper, crisper image. Flatbed scanners usually do not perform unsharp masking. Image editing applications such as Adobe Photoshop can be used to unsharp mask an image.(The name "unsharp masking" comes from the pre-computer photographic process used to sharpen a blurry negative.) 1, record 1, English, - unsharp%20masking

A mask is a thin black and white negative made from a transparency. It has no density in areas corresponding to the densest areas of the transparency. The mask is sandwiched together with the transparency to reduce the overall contrast or density range of a transparency while printing. An unsharp mask also increases sharpness at light/dark edges in the print. The light/dark edges of an unsharp mask are fuzzy so there is a ramp transition from light to dark. The corresponding edges in the transparency are sharp. When you sandwich them together aligning the images, the fuzzy mask edge is ramping where the sharp transparency edge is stepping. 2, record 2, English, - unsharp%20mask

Diffusion filters produce "soft" images and tend to flare bright areas of a scene into dark areas(...) There are several different types of diffusion filters on the market.(...) some contain wavy criss cross patterns, and some have concentric circles lightly etched into them. They all work in basically the same way, though. The plain areas of the diffusion filter allow the light to go straight through, forming a normal sharp image on the film. The areas of the diffusion filter that have been embossed or etched or waved or whatever bend the light that strikes them, forming one or more unsharp images that overlap the sharp one. 1, record 5, English, - diffusion%20filter

1, record 5, French, - bonnette%20%C3%A0%20flou
