[Avalanche Terrain. ] A good rule for mountain travel is to choose routes and stopping places that have as few hazards as possible.... The basic rule for route selection is : Avoid steep slopes when the snow is unstable; do not enter them and do not cross below them.

[...] Inutile par exemple de se perdre dans la végétation (vernes, forêt dense) alors qu'on peut la contourner [...]; - recherche esthétique : recherche de la progression la plus [...] variée, offrant le plus beau point de vue, etc.; - simplicité : recherche du cheminement le plus logique. Il existe des lignes plus évidentes que d'autres : thalweg, crête, combe; - facilité : par temps de brouillard, il faut des points ou des lignes faciles à trouver ou à suivre, quitte à faire un long détour. On a donné ici des critères fixes liés le plus souvent à la topographie. On peut aussi tenir compte des facteurs variables (nivologiques par exemple) [...] De toute manière, c'est sur le terrain que se fait le choix définitif.

Today wood piling is a mainstay of foundation systems. Thousands of pressure-treated wood pilings form the foundation of new construction projects at JFK Airport in New York and Dulles Airport in northern Virginia. The city of New Orleans is built on wood piles; because of the unstable ground on which the city rests, foundation piling is needed to reinforce its buildings and highways, including the massive Superdome.

A stability rating taken from the Snow Stability Rating System.... Snowpack stability varies considerably with terrain, often resulting in locally unstable areas. One should expect : isolated natural avalanches on specific terrain features and/or avalanches that may be triggered by light loads in areas with specific terrain features or certain snowpack characteristics. When doing stability tests, the expected results are generally easy to moderate.
