Record 1 2009-11-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Physics)
  • Nuclear Science and Technology
DEF

A highly irregular and often unsteady flow pattern consisting of large bubbles in [a] core, which continuously coalescence and break up.

OBS

The liquid tends to be near the well.

Record 2 2005-08-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aerodynamics and Theory of Gases
  • Wind Energy
CONT

Numerical modelling focused on the continued development of a prescribed wake vortex model for HAWT [horizontal axis wind turbine] performance prediction. This model represents the turbine blades as lifting lines from which emanate filaments of trailed vorticity. In yawed flow, additional filaments of shed vorticity are produced and the unsteady loading on the blades is represented by a semi-empirical unsteady aerofoil model.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Théorie des gaz et aérodynamique
  • Énergie éolienne
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Physics)
CONT

Usually, Marangoni convection is obscured by density-driven convective flows. Limited experience during space experiments indicates that above a critical Marangoni number(ratio of surface tension force to viscous force), the flow becomes unsteady and temperature fluctuations in the melt are observed. In addition, a detailesd series of ground and low-gravity experiments have demonstrated that striations due to Marangoni convection are produced in float-zone grown silicon.

Subject field(s)
  • Aeroindustry
CONT

The computer method consists of applying the three full Navier-Stokes equations of fluid mechanics(...) over a pattern of points on a theoretical airframe before any hardware exists. Plotted over a sufficiently large number of points around an aerodynamic shape, these equations can predict lift, drag and heating. Some unsteady [air] flow patterns, such as the 3, 000 Hz shock wave buzz round the inlet spike of a missile at Mach 3, have been successfully plotted.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Constructions aéronautiques
CONT
