In an anchorage where there is little or no current or tidal stream, and in reasonably calm weather, a ship may be pointed to lie at an angle with the line of her cable by putting a spring on her cable. First heave in a shackle or so of cable. Now lead a hawser [...] out through the aftermost quarter fairlead, then for’ard and outboard of all, and shackle it with a joggle shackle to the cable outboard of the hawsepipe, thereby forming a spring. Then belay the hawser and veer the cable, and the ship's head should pay off away from the side on which the spring is rove until pointing in the required direction. Alternatively the hawser may be brought to an after capstan and hove in as the cable is veered. 2, record 1, English, - after%20capstan

The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002... 2, record 3, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

A territory that entered the Canadian Confederation in 1898 as the "Yukon Territory", out of the District of Yukon created in 1895 in the Northwest Territories. Until 1999, the Yukon used to stand eleventh in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation of the ten provinces, then of the territories, listed, by convention, before the Northwest Territories even if the latter entered Confederation 28 years before. It now stands twelfth, after the Northwest Territories and before Nunavut. On March 27, 2002, the name was changed to "Yukon" even if the status of territory remains. 2, record 8, English, - Yukon
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The name of a territory and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the provincial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "Yukon" (or "territory of Yukon") for the geographical entity, "Yukon" for the provincial administration or as the short form, and "Yk." as the abbreviation to be officially recognized by the toponymic authority, a change from the previous "Y.T.". 2, record 8, English, - Yukon

This symbol is the same in all languages and must be used only in postal addresses and statistical charts where the identification of provinces and territories is restricted to two characters. A two-character territorial symbol must not be used instead of the abbreviation in a text or on a geographical map, a poster or a road sign. 2, record 8, English, - Yukon
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 3 OBS
The use of the definite article in English before "Yukon" is dependent upon how it is used in the context. If "Yukon" modifies another term, then the article is omitted. e.g. Yukon Indians comprise 25% of the population of the territory. If "Yukon" takes the inflected genitive (’s) , then the use of the article is optional. e.g. (the) Yukon’s wildlife resources; (the) Yukon’s native people. In every other case, the use of the definite article would be in keeping with common usage as it signals the absence of a generic geographic feature. Hence we say "the Mediterranean" (implied: Sea), "the Philippines" (implied: "Islands"). Currently, there is some debate as to the appropriateness of the definite article, all the more since "the Yukon" (implied: "territory") is seeking political parity with the other established "provinces" (statement of 1991). [Usage can thus tend to drop the article as is the case before the name of a province.] 6, record 8, English, - Yukon

The flagship urban-development project of the NCC in the last several decades has been Confederation Boulevard-the Capital' s ceremonial and discovery route. In collaboration with federal and municipal partners, the NCC designed and constructed this 7. 5-kilometre route around the heart of Canada's Capital Region. Aside from providing an elegant streetscape for some of the most important sites and institutions of the nation, the Boulevard is a focus for year-round national celebrations, events and interpretation programs that help people to discover important aspects of Canada's government, culture, heritage, landscape and relations with other nations of the world. The idea for a ceremonial route in the heart of the Capital goes back to the 19th century. However, it was not until 1967-centennial year-that planners began to talk about a ceremonial route for processions and state visits, as a unifying element in the core areas of Ottawa, Ontario, and Hull(now Gatineau), Quebec, and as a vehicle for communicating the Capital of Canadians. Planning began in 1982 and construction in 1985. The central part of Confederation Boulevard was officially opened by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien on June 30, 2000. The last phase of three-phase construction will be completed in 2006. 1, record 9, English, - Confederation%20Boulevard

The "Happy Birthday" story begins with two sisters from Kentucky Mildred J. Hill and Patty Smith Hill... One day in 1893 Patty... came up with the modest melody we now know as "Happy Birthday"; sister Patty added some simple lyrics and completed the creation of "Good Morning to All" a simple greeting song for teachers to use in welcoming students to class each day... Here the trail becomes murky--nobody really knows who wrote the words to "Happy Birthday to You" and put them to the Hills’ melody or when it happened. The "Happy Birthday to You" lyrics first appeared in a songbook edited by one Robert H. Coleman in March of 1924 where they were published as a second stanza to "Good Morning to You"; with the advent of radio and sound films "Happy Birthday" was widely popularized as a birthday celebration song and its lyrics supplanted the originals... The Chicago-based music publisher Clayton F. Summy Company working with Jessica Hill published and copyrighted "Happy Birthday" in 1935... so under current law the copyright protection of "Happy Birthday" will remain intact until at least 2030. 3, record 13, English, - Happy%20Birthday%20to%20You

Though it may seem unidiomatic to make litigation a count noun(hence a plural), the usage is old and is today common. "E. g. ", "[The] first and second parties now have certain litigations pending in the Mercer Circuit Court. "... "a single automobile litigation... consumed sixty-three trial days". "The firm engages in general civil practice with emphasis on business litigations". "No court in which a litigation to that end might be brought... This word is best not used, however, as an equivalent of action or suit :"Whether such claims are just need not be decided to determine the rights of the parties to this litigation [read suit]". Properly, litigation=the action or process of carrying on a suit in law or equity("OED") ;thus it does not refer to the suit itself, but to the maintenance of it. Here it seems to be used for trial :"As the rules became more numerous and more nicely distinguished, they became also less easily understood and applied by the great mass of people, until finally no one who had not given the subject particular attention could safely assume to conduct a litigation [read trial]". 3, record 14, English, - litigation

Until two years ago the nature of promoter base sequences was totally obscure. Now, however, a number of different promoter sequences are known and soon many more will be worked out. Soon after the initial binding to the RNA polymerase recognition site, the polymerase diffuses closer to the start of transcription to a group of At-rich base pairs to which it binds more tightly(RNA polymerase binding site). The fact that both binding sequences are AT-rich probably reflects the fact that such sequences denature much more easily than doGC-rich regions, and so are obvious targets for an enzyme like RNA polymerase, whose functioning demands local denaturation. 4, record 17, English, - AT%2Drich

Squat down towards the bar until your upper thigh is parallel to the floor. Next, grab the bar with a mixed grip with one hand overhand and one hand underhand. Now, drive your hips upward by contracting your quads and glutes. You are attempting to bring the weight upwards as you stand up. As the bar is being lifted off of the floor, begin to straighten your back up so that it is fully erect. This will utilize the muscles in the back. Until quite recently, it was believed that nef's role was to suppress transcription, but new experiments have cast doubt on that interpretation. Nef protein may somehow modify the cell to make it more suitable for manufacturing HIV virions later. In any event, it now appears that production of nef protein is required for the development of AIDS, a finding that could be important if a way can be found to block its action. 4, record 29, English, - nef%20protein

Canadian Football League East Division.... The East Division is one of the two regional divisions of the Canadian Football League. Although the CFL was not founded until 1958, the East Division and its clubs are descended from earlier leagues.... Pre-1907, predecessor of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, in 1968. This was followed by the formation of the Montreal Foot Ball Club in 1872, the Toronto Argonaut Football Club in 1873 and the Ottawa Football Club(the future Ottawa Rough Riders) in 1876.... In 1907, the Hamilton Tigers and Toronto Argonauts of the ORFU joined with the QRFU's Montreal Foot Ball Club and Ottawa Rough Riders(Ottawa had been moving back and forth between the two unions over the past few years) to form an elite competition, the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union [IRFU].... The IRFU changed its name to the Eastern Football Conference [EFC] in 1960.... In 1960, the CFL' s [Canadian Football League] two conferences agreed to a full merger and a full interlocking schedule. Although the EFC has carried on since that time as the CFL' s East Division, full authority is now vested within the CFL. 1, record 35, English, - Eastern%20Football%20Conference

The first CANPASS project underway was CANPASS-Highway. The CANPASS-Highway program will eventually be a national version of the PACE(Peace Arch Crossing Entry) project in B. C. which combines pre-approval processing, express lanes, a self-declaration card, and an automated billing system to speed up border crossings. Currently PACE users, for a $25 annual fee, receive a special windshield decal authenticity. Users deposit declaration cards in a box at the inspection booth before proceeding. Duties are charged to a credit card. Approximately 60, 000 vehicles use the PACE express lane to ensure that only approved travellers use it, and that those who do comply with the terms and conditions of the program. If users don’t comply, their privileges are withdrawn and appropriate penalties applied. Until now the CANPASS-Highway system for pre-approved travellers has been available only at four border crossings in British Columbia. However, down the road(so to speak) other suitable Canadian border crossing sites will have CANPASS-Highway capabilities. 2, record 43, English, - Peace%20Arch%20Crossing%20Entry

1, record 43, French, - Peace%20Arch%20Crossing%20Entry

"We’ll fly below the international space station and then we’ll fly all the way around out into the front, into what we call the V-bar, but we’re flying now out in front of the station. Occasionally used to mean a DECtape, as opposed to a MACROTAPE. A DECtape is a small reel about four inches in diameter of magnetic tape about an inch wide. Unlike those for today's macrotapes, microtape drivers allowed random access to the data. In their heyday they were used in pretty much same way one would now use a floppy disk : as a small, portable way to save and transport files and programs. Apparently the term microtape was actually the official term used within DEC for these tapes until someone coined the word "DECtape, "which of course sounded sexier to the marketroids... 1, record 53, English, - microtape

The holiday was first proclaimed on 5 May 1868, by General John Logan in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. Up until now the envelope equations have been written for a laterally unbounded system. The presence of side boundaries that confine the system can modify the instability mechanism. For example, in convection, viscous friction at a lateral wall increases the damping, which inhibits the instability. By contrast, a thermal perturbation in the wall or simply a difference of thermal conductivity between the fluid and the wall, can build up a horizontal temperature gradient that may induce a fluid motion, thus encouraging the instability. In both cases, we expect lateral boundary effects to impose modulations and act as boundary conditions on the envelope. 1, record 61, English, - lateral%20boundary%20effect

1, record 61, French, - effet%20de%20paroi%20lat%C3%A9rale

... two scientists at Imperial College, London, have perfected a system by which a flame in a spacecraft can be safely used for cutting, welding and even cooking. The number of search computations with respect to an exhaustive search can be reduced for unimodal functions by using the dichotomous search procedure. The first step here is to evaluate two points separated by some interval(delta) in the domain of definition. The half of the domain in which the maximum or minimum lies can now be determined, and two new points can be placed in the center of this interval and so forth until the value of the interval approaches(eta). Let us now... consider... the symmetrical construction of a typical plywood board. 1.(a) The crossing of the grain of each adjacent veneer gives to plywood the greatest possible strength in both directions. As the number of plies are increased, the mass gains in strength until a 7-ply board, 5/8 in. thick, the resistance to bending is practically equal in both directions of the grain.(b) This cross-grained construction also obviously adds greatly to the resistance to splitting-a point of great value when we consider the placing of nails, screws or bolts close to the edge of the board.... 1, record 66, English, - resistance%20to%20splitting

In Africa too the abundant crocodilian remains that are present in the fossil-rich formations of the Great Rift Valley demonstrate that the population of such animals was quite varied until well into Quaternary times. In addition to forms that are now extinct both the Nile crocodile(Crocodylus niloticus) and the West African long-snouted crocodile(Crocodylus cataphractus) were already present at the beginning of the Quaternary. 1, record 68, English, - Crocodylus%20cataphractus

After thorough rinsing in water the polished surface is etched for 1 1/2 to 2 seconds in 33% diluted hydrochloric acid and then once more thoroughly rinsed in water.(...) The etched surface is now completely dried(...) and placed horizontally on plasticene with the polished surface up. As soon as the surface is more or less ’room dry’, acetone is carefully poured over the surface and continually squirted over the surface with a small pipette. The acetate sheet is immediately rolled on during this process.(...) The acetate sheet is pressed down with the finger and gently held down for about 5-10 minutes so that the peel can shrink. This shows itself in a slight waviness of the surface. The film is then carefully lifted off. 1, record 69, English, - lacquer%20peel%20method
