The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002...

A territory that entered the Canadian Confederation in 1898 as the "Yukon Territory", out of the District of Yukon created in 1895 in the Northwest Territories. Until 1999, the Yukon used to stand eleventh in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation of the ten provinces, then of the territories, listed, by convention, before the Northwest Territories even if the latter entered Confederation 28 years before. It now stands twelfth, after the Northwest Territories and before Nunavut. On March 27, 2002, the name was changed to "Yukon" even if the status of territory remains.

The name of a territory and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the provincial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "Yukon" (or "territory of Yukon") for the geographical entity, "Yukon" for the provincial administration or as the short form, and "Yk." as the abbreviation to be officially recognized by the toponymic authority, a change from the previous "Y.T.".

The flagship urban-development project of the NCC in the last several decades has been Confederation Boulevard-the Capital' s ceremonial and discovery route. In collaboration with federal and municipal partners, the NCC designed and constructed this 7. 5-kilometre route around the heart of Canada's Capital Region. Aside from providing an elegant streetscape for some of the most important sites and institutions of the nation, the Boulevard is a focus for year-round national celebrations, events and interpretation programs that help people to discover important aspects of Canada's government, culture, heritage, landscape and relations with other nations of the world. The idea for a ceremonial route in the heart of the Capital goes back to the 19th century. However, it was not until 1967-centennial year-that planners began to talk about a ceremonial route for processions and state visits, as a unifying element in the core areas of Ottawa, Ontario, and Hull(now Gatineau), Quebec, and as a vehicle for communicating the Capital of Canadians. Planning began in 1982 and construction in 1985. The central part of Confederation Boulevard was officially opened by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien on June 30, 2000. The last phase of three-phase construction will be completed in 2006.

"Happy Birthday to You" is an American song which is sung to celebrate the anniversary of a person’s birth. Non-English speakers have translated it into other languages.

The "Happy Birthday" story begins with two sisters from Kentucky Mildred J. Hill and Patty Smith Hill... One day in 1893 Patty... came up with the modest melody we now know as "Happy Birthday"; sister Patty added some simple lyrics and completed the creation of "Good Morning to All" a simple greeting song for teachers to use in welcoming students to class each day... Here the trail becomes murky--nobody really knows who wrote the words to "Happy Birthday to You" and put them to the Hills’ melody or when it happened. The "Happy Birthday to You" lyrics first appeared in a songbook edited by one Robert H. Coleman in March of 1924 where they were published as a second stanza to "Good Morning to You"; with the advent of radio and sound films "Happy Birthday" was widely popularized as a birthday celebration song and its lyrics supplanted the originals... The Chicago-based music publisher Clayton F. Summy Company working with Jessica Hill published and copyrighted "Happy Birthday" in 1935... so under current law the copyright protection of "Happy Birthday" will remain intact until at least 2030.

Here it seems to be used for trial :"As the rules became more numerous and more nicely distinguished, they became also less easily understood and applied by the great mass of people, until finally no one who had not given the subject particular attention could safely assume to conduct a litigation [read trial]".

The first CANPASS project underway was CANPASS-Highway. The CANPASS-Highway program will eventually be a national version of the PACE(Peace Arch Crossing Entry) project in B. C. which combines pre-approval processing, express lanes, a self-declaration card, and an automated billing system to speed up border crossings. Currently PACE users, for a $25 annual fee, receive a special windshield decal authenticity. Users deposit declaration cards in a box at the inspection booth before proceeding. Duties are charged to a credit card. Approximately 60, 000 vehicles use the PACE express lane to ensure that only approved travellers use it, and that those who do comply with the terms and conditions of the program. If users don’t comply, their privileges are withdrawn and appropriate penalties applied. Until now the CANPASS-Highway system for pre-approved travellers has been available only at four border crossings in British Columbia. However, down the road(so to speak) other suitable Canadian border crossing sites will have CANPASS-Highway capabilities.

Le premier projet CANPASS à avoir vu le jour est CANPASS-Autoroute. Le programme CANPASS-Autoroute se transformera éventuellement en une version nationale du projet PACE (Peace Arch Crossing Entry) de la Colombie-Britannique qui combine le traitement des voyageurs ayant fait l'objet d'un prédédouanement, les voies rapides, la fiche de déclaration en détail et un système de facturation automatisé en vue d'accélérer le passage de la frontière. Dans le cadre du projet actuel, les participants au projet PACE disposent, pour 25 $ par année, d'une vignette spéciale pour leur pare-brise et utilisent les voies spéciales où les douaniers vérifient visuellement l'authenticité de la vignette. Les participants déposent les cartes de déclaration dans une boîte située au poste d'inspection avant de poursuivre leur route. La carte de crédit des participants est débitée des frais de douanes. Il y a environ 60 000 véhicules par mois qui utilisent la voie rapide du projet PACE économisant jusqu'à 90 p. 100 du temps qu'il faut normalement pour franchir la frontière. Cette voie spéciale est surveillée par des inspecteurs douaniers de manière que seuls les voyageurs autorisés l'utilisent et que les utilisateurs respectent les modalités du programme. S'ils ne les respectent pas, leurs privilèges leur sont retirés et des pénalités appropriées leur sont imposées.
