Until this year, the memorial plaque [of the December 6, 1989, mass shooting at Montreal' s École Polytechnique] near the site of the murders did not mention that anyone was killed — instead referring to a "tragic event" — nor the fact that 14 women were gunned down simply because they were women. A new, recently erected plaque now states clearly that the women were killed in an antifeminist act, and explicitly condemns all forms of violence against women. 2, record 1, English, - antifeminist%20act

Color space-dyeing is a form of yarn dyeing which is again coming into use. It is an ancient craft to which different local names, such as tie-dyeing, have been applied. It refers to the coloring of yarns at intervals spaced along the yarn length.... this form of dyeing arose spontaneously and became a part of the textile craft tradition. In many places, tie-dyeing methods were the only ones used to create pattern in a fabric. The Japanese, for instance until fairly recently used tie-dyed yarns for the warp and weft of fabrics to produce a diversity of interesting and popular designs.... Developments in technique.... mechanized methods have replaced the ancient laborious ones of applying color space-dyeing. 1, record 6, English, - color%20space%2Ddyeing

2, record 17, French, - microscopie%20%C3%A9lectronique

Until quite recently, it was believed that nef's role was to suppress transcription, but new experiments have cast doubt on that interpretation. Nef protein may somehow modify the cell to make it more suitable for manufacturing HIV virions later. In any event, it now appears that production of nef protein is required for the development of AIDS, a finding that could be important if a way can be found to block its action. 4, record 18, English, - nef%20protein

1, record 23, French, - vieillissement%20du%20cerveau

X-ray welding of metal-matrix composites.... X-rays with energies in the range 3-200 keV have penetration lengths on the order of 0. 001-50 mm for various materials. Therefore, they have the potential for use as a volumetric heating source, provided a sufficiently intense source of x-rays is available. Until recently this was not possible. However, with the advent of third-generation synchrotron radiation sources, tunable x-rays with power densities greater than 104 W/cm2 in a 1-2 mm spot can be produced with the use of insertion devices. At such high power levels, localized melting and even vaporization can be induced in a number of materials. If these x-ray beams can be utilized in a controlled manner, they have the potential for use as welding sources for classes of materials that have eluded conventional welding approaches. 1, record 32, English, - X%2Dray%20welding

Wind erosion models have been used to assess policy impacts on soil erosion, but validation of models has been difficult until recently. We evaluated the Environmental Policy Integrated Climate(EPIC) wind erosion submodel by comparing simulation results to field measured wind erosion sediment losses. Using standard model inputs and actual wind velocities, wind erosion was simulated for a field near Lethbridge, Alberta where field measurements of wind erosion were made in April 1992 on a Dark Brown Chernozemic soil. The EPIC submodel predicted erosion losses for each day that erosion was measured, and approximated the magnitude of erosion on 6 of the 7 erosion events. EPIC significantly overestimated erosion for one event and also simulated erosion on 3 days when no erosion was recorded. Field length had a larger effect on simulation results during large erosion events than for smaller events. The effect of surface soil water content on wind erosion appeared to be captured by the model, but only limited data were available to evaluate this aspect. Other portions of the model such as the effects of surface roughness and vegetative cover could not be evaluated in this study. 2, record 42, English, - Environmental%20Policy%20Integrated%20Climate

Second carrier designation policy. Clear rules will govern the allocation of second designation opportunities. Assessment of applications for second designation for scheduled passenger services by a Canadian carrier, large or small, will be guided for market thresholds, as follows :-in country markets with at least 300, 000 one-way origin/destination passengers per year travelling by scheduled air service, second designations will be made.... Applications for designation in markets already served by two carriers will not be considered until markets have grown significantly beyond their current passenger level. The only exception will be the United States which is by far Canada's largest international market. Under the recently signed "open skies" agreement, any Canadian carrier will be permitted to serve any route to the United States.... In order to facilitate this policy, Canada will negotiate second designation rights in markets as they mature, whenever practical, and will seek agreement on the necessary capacity and frequency of service to give effect to such rights. As of the date of announcement of this policy, the following country markets meet the 300, 000 passenger threshold, thereby enabling second carrier designation : the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Hong Kong and Japan. 3, record 44, English, - designated%20air%20carrier

2, record 44, French, - transporteur%20d%C3%A9sign%C3%A9

Second carrier designation policy. Clear rules will govern the allocation of second designation opportunities. Assessment of applications for second designation for scheduled passenger services by a Canadian carrier, large or small, will be guided by market thresholds, as follows :-in country markets with at least 300, 000 one-way origin/destination passengers per year travelling by scheduled air service, second designations will be made.... 1, record 54, English, - second%20designation%20rights

As a groundwater pollution control mechanism, the use of a liner on the bottom and sides of a landfill has been considered necessary for many years. This necessity is created by the moisture in the landfill materials(augmented by rainfall and snowmelt) interacting with the contained waste, forming a liquid called "leachate".... The types of liners that have been used are... numerous... but the predominant liner material until recently has been clay.... There are two drawbacks to clay liners, however, both of which have given impetus to the use of geomembranes for landfill liners. 1, record 59, English, - landfill%20liner

Geomembranes are very low permeability membrane liners and barriers used with any geotechnical engineering based material so as to control fluid migrations in a man-made project, structure or system. The term liner applies when a geomembrane is used as an interface or a surface revetment. The term barrier is usually reserved for the cases where the geomembrane is used inside an earth mass. Geomembrane is a generic term which has been proposed to replace many terms such as: synthetic membranes, polymeric membranes, plastic liners, flexible membrane liners, impermeable membranes and impervious sheets. 2, record 59, English, - landfill%20liner
