Dépolymérisation qui procède par une séquence répétitive de réactions chimiques progressant au long d'une macromolécule et qui aboutit habituellement à des molécules monomères et à des chaînes de plus en plus courtes à chaque stade réactionnel.

Ce néologisme est formé pour désigner le processus inverse de la phase principale d'une polymérisation en chaîne, la phase de propagation, qui procède par une séquence répétitive de réactions allongeant la macromolécule d'une unité monomère à chaque stade réactionnel.
