Agricultural production is dependent, in part, on the cycling of nitrogen within the rural environment.... Before nitrogen can be used by plants, it must be converted into forms that are available to plants; this conversion is called mineralization. The plants take up these mineral forms through their root systems and form plant proteins and other organic forms of nitrogen. Livestock eat crops and produce manure, which is returned to the soil, adding organic and mineral forms of nitrogen to the soil, which can be used again by the next crop. 2, record 1, English, - return%20to%20soil

2, record 1, French, - retourner%20au%20sol

Open GISs are integrated systems and tools that provide interoperability among data and processes for solving geospatial problems. One aspect of providing interoperability is to overcome the difficulties caused by the data conversion required in current GIS implementations. GIS users are usually faced with the problem of converting geospatial data from many sources and GIS platforms; it has been found that up to 80% of the time and cost of any GIS implementation is spent on populating the GIS database. Open GISs are expected to overcome this obstacle by utilizing geospatial metadata and spatial data transfer standards. Although opinions currently differ on geospatial data and geoprocessing standardization and on the specifics of the architecture of open GISs, it is generally agreed that, at a minimum, they should automate the task of populating GIS databases. In addition to data interoperability, open GISs should facilitate simple strategies for application development(model integration), and provide solutions on highly distributed heterogeneous computing environments that include computing resources ranging from desktop machines to supercomputers. This course addresses the current trends and approaches for building open GISs and discusses future directions for these GISs. Also covered are the benefits of open GISs to GIS users and developers. The aim of the Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program(RRAP), administered by the Canadian Housing and Mortgage Corporation, is to support the renovation and repair of housing occupied by low-income people to bring it up to basic health and safety standards. This includes rental and rooming house accommodation for people at risk of homelessness. The program flexibility also allows for the conversion of non-residential buildings into accommodation for low-income people. 1, record 14, English, - Residential%20Rehabilitation%20Assistance%20Program

A new device, developed in Norway, harnesses energy from the ocean waves using a vertically oscillating float connected to a piston pump. Possible applications range from desalination of seawater and clean water supply to fish farms, to electricity production using a turbo-generator. This wave energy conversion unit is being developed by the Norwegian company ConWEC AS... The ConWEC device absorbs wave energy by means of a float which oscillates up and down inside a cylindrical structure with a submerged opening through which waves can act. The energy in the waves is converted to mechanical energy by a pump with its piston rigidly connected to the float. Seawater can be pumped into an energy storage in the form of a pressure tank(or possibly an elevated water reservoir) from which a turbine can be run to complete the conversion to electrical energy. 2, record 15, English, - oscillating%20float

The U. S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service has provided a range of working estimates on how much carbon various forests in the United States will take up over the next fifty to one hundred years. It has concluded that significant amounts of currently poorly stocked forest land could be afforested for increased carbon sequestration. Ameliorating the social pressures that drive the conversion of forests to developed and urban uses may further reduce CO2 emissions from deforestation. 2, record 18, English, - poorly%20stocked%20forest%20land
