English

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

  • Racquet Sports
DEF

A ground stroke played by left-handers to the left of the body, and by right-handers to the right.

CONT

For the right-handed player, all strokes on the right side of the body are forehand and all strokes on the left side of the body are backhand.

CONT

When Greg Rusedski hits a tennis ball, it seems to involve a lot of moving parts. A lean six-foot-four and 190 pounds, he’s all arms and legs as he whomps his big serve and whacks his forehands and backhands.

CONT

After Becker plopped a forehand into the net, he offered a perfunctory handshake at the net without even glancing at Voinea.

OBS

Both the French and Spanish make much use of the anglicism "drive", albeit not in a correct fashion: In English "drive" is supposed to imply a ball hit with a lot of pace to win a point outright, regardless of the type of spin used to accomplish this task, and regardless of which side it is hit (forehand or backhand). (The terms "shot" and "stroke", being more neutral, need not imply any added spin whatsoever.) However in both French and Spanish, "drive" is also used often as a synonym for "forehand" (shot/stroke).

DEF

CONT

Frost heaving of bedrock is a widespread process in permafrost regions which may generate forces and movements that detract from the otherwise sound foundation performance usually associated with bedrock. Depending on pre-existing fracture fabric, bedrock heave features may take the form of single ejected blocks or dome-shaped accumulations of up to several meters in diameter.... a pore-water expulsion mechanism can be invoked to explain the origin of the forces producing large rock-heave features... The entrapment of groundwater in a closed system creates zones where high hydrostatic pressures can be developed. This process is common in the highly cohesive, crystalline rocks of the Canadian Shield.... rock heave features comprised of a bent discontinuous layer occur where the water-filled gap is overlain by several blocks and where the fractures dip outwards...

The most basic and traditional types of candles are those made by the dipping method. This is how candles have been produced for centuries. The process involves taking a wick and dipping it into a large can of molten wax. The wax is left to dry after each dip and the process is then repeated. Each time the wick is dipped into into the wax, the shape of the candle is gradually built up and formed.
