SIAM is a technology that defies the current laws of imaging. It permits scientists to view images much smaller than the wavelength of light and approaching the atomic level, an achievement that has long been considered impossible according to the basic principles of classical optics. SIAM works by shining light through a thin sample onto an ultra-sharp, vibrating tip on the other side. The light scattering from the tip gets altered as the tip approaches within a nanometer from the sample surface, as it vibrates, due to the optical interaction with the local properties of the sample. An image is built up by recording the scattered light as the probe is scanned line by line. The scientists recorded the variations in the scattered light using a very sensitive device--an optical interferometer--which is capable of measuring modulations in light level corresponding to single photons. As the tip moved across the surface, these variations were mapped by a computer into a picture of the surface, showing features such as oil droplets and steps on mica that were only a few atoms in size.

A sewage pump is an essential component of any waste processing system. While most plumbing systems rely on gravity to bring the waste material down to the sewer level to be processed, occasionally the sewage line is on higher ground than where the waste is originating from. Pit sawing operations have a long and vibrant history. Well before circular saws were used to saw logs lengthwise, they were processed by placing them over a "pit"-hence the reference to "pit saw. "The saw operates vertically up and down. Operated by two men, a man on top, known as the "Top Dog", guided the saw as it was pulled down in a cutting motion by the "Underdog. "The "Top dog" recovered the saw and the "Underdog" then pulled it down in a cutting motion again. Needless to say the "Underdog" copped a fair bit of sawdust. The top of the saw has a fixed "tiller handle" so the topdog can guide it and cut a straight line. The lower part of the saw has a "block" which is easily detachable with a wedge. The block can be taken off to allow the saw to be threaded through the saw cut.

Le conseiller principal de l'ESA et son équipe travailleront en partenariat avec l'équipe du directeur des Ressources humaines et lui fournira continuellement de l'information sur les résultats et sur tout problème touchant la prestation des services au client. Les membres de l'ESA sont de tous les niveaux de l'organisation, de l'employé de soutien à l'agent. La constitution de l'ESA est revue chaque année en fonction des plans d'activités des clients et des ententes de service. L'ESA est le seul point de contact des clients pour les demandes de dotation, de design organisationnel et de classification. Elle est également chargée d'offrir ces services de la façon la plus stratégique et efficiente possible. Le directeur des Ressources humaines tiendra le conseiller principal de l'ESA au courant de tout problèm.

One of the recommendations of the panel that has attracted the attention of attorneys is that fingerprinting tests showing a phenomenon called band shifting be declared "inconclusive" until laboratories have performed adequate studies on the effect. Band shifting can make two forensic samples from different biological sources appear the same; private companies that perform DNA fingerprinting and the Federal Bureau of investigation have already made attempts to correct for it. But the McKusick panel was not convinced that such attempts protect those accused: a suspect could be wrongly convicted if the "correction" was itself in error.
