The ICBL was launched in October 1992 by a group of six non-governmental organizations : Handicap International, Human Rights Watch, Medico International, Mines Advisory Group, Physicians for Human Rights and Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. These founding organizations witnessed the horrendous effect of mines on the communities they were working with in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America and saw how mines hampered and even prevented their development efforts in these countries. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines(ICBL) is a global network in over 70 countries that works for a world free of antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions, where landmine and cluster munition survivors can lead fulfilling lives. The Campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to bring about the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. Since then, we have been advocating for the words of the treaty to become a reality, demonstrating on a daily basis that civil society has the power to change the world. As a member of the Cluster Munition Coalition, the ICBL is engaged in the global effort to ban cluster munitions and to address their humanitarian impact. In December 2006, the ICBL decided to engage extensively in the global effort to prohibit cluster munitions. This marked the first time that the ICBL had become significantly engaged on an issue other than antipersonnel mines. The main reasons for the ICBL' s decision were that cluster munitions inevitably end up leaving behind large numbers of unexploded ’duds’ which behave essentially like antipersonnel mines; that many ICBL members had been already working extensively on cluster munitions; and that international efforts to achieve a global ban on cluster munitions were at a crucial point, a point where the ICBL could have a meaningful impact.

Nous plaidons pour : L'adhésion universelle au Traité d'interdiction des mines et à la Convention sur les armes à sous-munitions; La mise en œuvre complète et le monitoring de ces deux traités; Le financement adéquat du déminage humanitaire et des programmes de sensibilisation aux risques, ainsi qu'une efficacité accrue dans ces domaines; L'assistance aux survivants, à leurs familles et leurs communautés et ce, de manière significative et durable. Nos activités : Nous participons et contribuons de manière experte aux mécanismes du Traité tels que les Réunions des États parties et les Réunions intersessionnelles des Comités Permanents. Nous nous prononçons contre et condamnons l'utilisation des mines et des armes à sous-munitions et appelons les États non parties à adhérer aux traités. Afin de garder les problématiques des mines et des armes à sous-munitions au plus haut à l'agenda des gouvernements, nous entreprenons des actions auprès des médias, du grand public et entretenons des contacts directs avec les gouvernements. Nous menons un travail de recherche et produisons le rapport de l’Observatoire des mines qui a pour objectif de surveiller la mise en œuvre et le respect des dispositions du Traité ainsi que d’évaluer les efforts entrepris par la communauté internationale pour résoudre le problème des mines et restes explosifs de guerre.

The designer [of a show jumping course] can choose from a wide range of jumps that fall into three main categories : uprights, spreads, and triples. Uprights are jumps with the elements placed one above the other. An example is the post and rail, which has poles placed one above the other between two posts. This jump can generally be made higher or lower by adjusting the rests or cups on to the posts. A spread in an obstacle set up so that the horse has to jump both height and width. Spreads include the well-known water jump, the double oxer(two sets of uprights with a hedge sandwiched between), and the hog's back(three parallel rails, with the middle rail higher than the other two). The most common triple is the triple bars, which has three poles on separate supports. The poles are set [at] different heights, with the lowest one at the front. The jumps looks a bit like a staircase. Combinations are two or more jumps placed so close together that the horse can take only one or two strides between each one. Three jumps is the maximum in a combination.

Found in Wales and Scotland, in England where it borders those two, and in the area around Omagh, Northern Ireland, the Old Red Sandstone is a huge set of sedimentary rocks(primarily brown and red, giving it its name) dating to the Devonian. It is a marine formation, having been laid down from 408 to 370 million years ago as earlier Silurian rocks uplifted by the formation of Pangaea eroded and slid into a body of fresh water(probably a series of large river deltas). They are extremely thick, up to 11, 000 meters in places, and can be subdivided into three categories "Lower", "Middle", and "Upper" from oldest to youngest. As a result, the Old Red Sandstone is a rich source of marine fossils.

The American Space Agency Nasa... is putting several million dollars into the project under its advanced concepts programme. At the heart of a space elevator would be a cable reaching up as far as 100, 000km from the surface of the Earth. The earthbound end would be tethered to a base station, probably somewhere in the middle of the Pacific ocean. The other end would be attached to an orbiting object in space acting as a counterweight, the momentum of which would keep the cable taut and allow vehicles to climb up and down it. A space elevator would make rockets redundant by granting cheaper access to space. At about a third of the way along the cable-36, 000 km from Earth-objects take a day to complete a full orbit. If the cable's centre of gravity remained at this height, the cable would remain vertical, as satellites placed at this height are geostationary, effectively hovering over the same spot on the ground. To build a space elevator such a geostationary satellite would be placed into orbit carrying the coiled-up cable. One weighted end of the cable would then be dropped back towards Earth, while the other would be unreeled off into space. Mechanical lifters could then climb up the cable from the ground, ferrying up satellites, space probes and eventually tourists. The biggest technical obstacle is finding a material strong but light enough to make the cable; this is where the carbon nanotubes come in. These are microscopically thin tubes of carbon that are as strong as diamonds but flexible enough to turn into fibre. In theory, a nanotube ribbon about one metre wide and as thin as paper could support a space elevator.

Le plus gros défi technologique serait de construire 91 000 km de nanotubes car aujourd'hui la technologie ne permet d'en construire que quelques centimètres. Le ratio actuel nanotube/résine epoxy est de 60/40. Il faudra réussir à descendre à 98/2. Les principaux risques liés au transport par ascenseur seront dus aux météorites, aux ouragans ou aux attaques terroristes. Le filin pourra être réparé in-situ. Ce système ne nécessiterait pas de maîtriser la fusion nucléaire. De simples batteries et panneaux solaires suffiront à alimenter l'ascenseur. La plupart des technologies nécessaires existent déjà ou existeront dans le court terme. Les prévisions actuelles prévoient un budget de 7 à 10 milliards sur 15 ans.

Running along the full length of the wheat seed is the crease, which reaches in depth almost to the middle of the grain. The seed, or berry as it is sometimes called, is made up of three main parts : the interior starchy endosperm, the seed coat or bran, and the embryo called the germ. An average well matured grain of wheat has approximately the following compositions : endosperm, 85%, bran, 13%; and germ, 2%.

A new, stitch-free wound closure technique for closing surgical incisions used at Brooklyn’s Maimonides Medical Center. The zipper is generally quicker to apply than sutures or staples, leaves a less disfiguring scar and can simply be peeled off in the shower after about 10 days.

Looking like an oversized white gauze bandage, the surgical zipper is a polyester patch with a polyethylene zipper running down the middle. The underside is coated with an adhesive like a Band-Aid. To close an incision, the surgeon peels off the paper strip exposing the adhesive, and places one edge on each side of the wound. While gently putting up on the tab, the surgeon pulls the zipper shut; as the zipper comes together so too do the edges of the skin. The process takes less than two minutes.
