... some substances are not being released into the environment in an easily defined way like from a pipe. Instead, they may be released into the environment because they end up in a landfill, and ultimately break down, and then enter a wastewater stream. The words "medium indicative of release to the environment" apply to something like that wastewater stream. Take for example a substance that is present in a consumer product and is released when the product is used or as the product degrades.... As the product containing the substance is used, traces of the substance may end up in municipal wastewater effluent. Big Sisters and Big Brothers were agencies in Ottawa that provided adult friends and mentors to girls and boys in need in order to enable them to achieve their full potential as young men and women. Studies have shown that mentoring is the most effective way of helping a youngster deal positively with the challenges of growing up. For almost 30 years, these two agencies operated side by side in the Greater Ottawa Area. Now, we are one organization, with an aim to improve service delivery, expand the number of children we serve and present a more coherent fact to clients, funders and the general public alike. 1, record 9, English, - Big%20Brothers%20Big%20Sisters%20Ottawa

1, record 24, French, - Programme%20des%20jeunes%20ambassadeurs%20pour%20l%27action%20contre%20les%20mines

Distinct polypeptide chain in which lies the domain accommodating the catalytic site of complex enzymes. It is completely separated from the domain building up the binding site for the regulatory effector(s). From an evolutionary viewpoint, it is probable that gene fusion did occur in most cases rather than that originally continuous polypeptide chains have separated. In some oligomeric enzymes the allosteric site may have appeared as a result of gene duplication, e. g. in glutamate dehydrogenase and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, whereas in others by acquisition of a foreign structural gene, e. g. the NAD-binding domain in glycogen phosphorylase. However, in present day complex enzymes the catalytic and regulatory protein units remained separate, but associable, entities. 2, record 32, English, - catalytic%20subunit

Significant temperature gradients are present across the fuel particles when a nuclear reactor is producing power. The Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air, which we call the atmosphere. It reaches over 560 kilometers(348 miles) from the surface of the Earth, so we are only able to see what occurs fairly close to the ground.... Life on Earth is supported by the atmosphere, solar energy, and our planet's magnetic fields. The atmosphere absorbs the energy from the Sun, recycles water and other chemicals, and works with the electrical and magnetic forces to provide a moderate climate. The atmosphere also protects us from high-energy radiation and the frigid vacuum of space. The envelope of gas surrounding the Earth changes from the ground up. Four distinct layers have been identified using thermal characteristics(temperature changes), chemical composition, movement, and density [:] the troposphere..., the stratosphere..., the mesophere..., the thermosphere. The exosphere starts at the top to the thermosphere and continues until it merges with interplanetary gases, or space. In this region of the atmosphere, Hydrogen and Helium are the prime components and are only present at extremely low densities. 3, record 51, English, - Earth%26rsquo%3Bs%20atmosphere

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs, are a group of chemicals that are used as flame retardants in a variety of polymer resins and plastics. They are found in many products in most homes and businesses, including furniture, TVs, stereos, computers, carpets, and curtains. PBDEs are also used, to a lesser degree, in some textiles, adhesives, sealants and coatings.... PBDEs are ubiquitous, global environmental pollutants that are present in all parts of the environment, and can be found in samples taken virtually anywhere. Hemovigilance is performed to meet three objectives at both the local and national level : to identify risks and their related factor(s) and monitor these risks. The alert function cannot be dissociated from epidemiological surveillance because both processes involve evaluating the impact of the preventive measures in place. The incidence of risks must be estimated and their evolution followed up for each type of recorded transfusion-related incident. At the blood collection level which is part of donor selection, the goal of hemovigilance is to assess the relevance of various medical indicators present in individuals who wish to donate blood. At the transfusion level, the goal of hemovigilance is to estimate the incidence of transfusion-induced side effects in recipients(e. g. viral or bacterial contamination, alloimmunization transfusion attribution errors). The incidence and prevalence of transfusion-associated incidents occasionally justifies the distinction between the three elements of the hemovigilance strategy : the alert system, recipient surveillance and blood collection surveillance. 4, record 54, English, - haemovigilance

An airport located in Dorval, now a part of the city of Montréal, and used for private, local, national and international flights. The airport was first the "Dorval Airport, "from the name of the city in the suburbs of Montréal, then the "Dorval International Airport, "to become the airport for domestic flights, that is the flights limited to Canada, with the construction of the "Mirabel International Airport" inaugurated in 1975 and intended for international flights. But inadequate terrestrial links between Montréal and Mirabel contributed to give to the Montréal Dorval Airport("Montréal-Dorval") its international status, leaving the charter(up to Autumn 2004) and cargo flights to the Mirabel Airport("Montréal-Mirabel") ;political decisions for these ends were accompanied by important subsidies for the building of added accommodations to what has become the "Montréal Dorval International Airport. "With the amalgamation or merging of all the cities on the Île de Montréal, including the former cities of Montréal and of Dorval, to form the new city of Montréal on the 1 January 2002, the airport became the "Montréal Airport, "a reality usage had already confirmed. On the 1 January 2004, the airport's name changed to "Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport" to honour a former Prime Minister of Canada as do other important airports in the country. The official name will, no doubt, not be quoted at length all the time; the forms mentioned as correct on the present record will surely be used instead, including the recommendation of the airport authority as to the use of "Montréal-Trudeau" as the current short form("fly from Montréal-Trudeau", or "land at the Montréal-Trudeau Airport"). Even if the airport encountered many name and status changes, it never had a name that includes a comma, and had always been represented by YUL, its IATA three-letter code. 3, record 57, English, - Montr%C3%A9al%20Pierre%20Elliott%20Trudeau%20International%20Airport

The Montréal Dorval International Airport has been officially renamed "Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport," written "Montréal - Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport" (a dash with a space before and after) in some governmental documents, during a ceremony held on September 9, 2003. The new name is effective starting January 1, 2004. Pierre Elliott Trudeau, of the Liberal Party, has been Prime Minister of Canada from April 20, 1968 to June 3, 1979, and from March 3, 1980 to June 29, 1984; he died in Montréal on September 28, 2000. 3, record 57, English, - Montr%C3%A9al%20Pierre%20Elliott%20Trudeau%20International%20Airport

In the legend, it is mentioned that the administrator, Aéroports de Montréal, recommends the use of "Montréal-Trudeau" as a current short form and that the code identifying the airport will remain YUL, the code of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) being international and the same in all languages. 3, record 57, English, - Montr%C3%A9al%20Pierre%20Elliott%20Trudeau%20International%20Airport

The GPS EOW rollover occurs every 1, 024 weeks--about once every 20 years. The GPS system calculates time by counting the number of weeks since January 6, 1980--up to a maximum of 1, 023 weeks. At midnight between August 21-22, 1999, the GPS week "counter" will roll back to zero weeks. DOD says this will not create problems for the GPS satellites or DOD's GPS ground control center, but it could present a problem for consumers who use older GPS receivers and related applications. That's because after August 21, 1999, receivers could process satellite data incorrectly and display inaccurate information. 6, record 60, English, - end%2Dof%2Dweek%20rollover

Amino acid(AA) analyses of barley are needed for accurate diet formulation and as a guide for line selection by plant breeders. At present analyses are done by wet chemistry which is slow, costly and produce chemical residues which end up in the water systems. 1, record 70, French, - analyse%20des%20AA

Pyrohydrolysis is a lixiviant regeneration process in which metal chlorides obtained from leaching either primary or secondary raw materials can be thermally decomposed into metal oxides and hydrogen chloride. Every metal chloride hydrolyses under different conditions, i. e. temperature and gas atmosphere, which opens up opportunities for metal separation. The separation of iron from zinc, lead and/or cadmium present as oxide, ferrite or silicate in both waste materials and ores through pyrohydrolysis is being investigated in both a tube furnace an a 100 mm diameter fluid bed. 1, record 71, English, - pyrohydrolysis

An analysis of the amino acid sequences of variable regions of human and mouse antibody molecules was performed. It involved comparison of their constituent tetrapeptides with those found in a reference set(the somatic self) built with non-immunological proteins found in a protein data base. It appeared that hypervariable regions, particularly CDR1 and CDR3, are often made up of rare tetrapeptides not present in the reference set. As assessed by simple statistical tests, this bias was significant. We discuss its possible connection with the problem of antibody immunogenicity. This result provides indirect support for the existence of idiopeptides predicted by the "peptidic self model". 2, record 79, English, - peptidic%20self%20model

Large numbers of low-income Canadians experience emotional distress (Stephens 1981); feelings of futility, helplessness, inadequacy, and depression contribute to a life-setting conducive to illness - a syndrome which Engel (1968) has called "the giving-up/given-up complex". is the fundamental part of the Mass as it embodies the Consecration, the great act of sacrifice itself. The whole of the Canon is said by the priest in an inaudible voice. Its intention is to re-enact vividly what Christ did by anticipation at the Last Supper. The method followed is to use, as nearly as possible, our Lord's own words and actions. Everything from the beginning of the preface to the Amen before the Our Father forms one single eucharistic prayer and action, although in the present Mass it is broken up into several separate prayers and parts. 1, record 86, English, - Canon

1, record 86, French, - Canon
