Depressional wetlands occur in topographic depressions. Dominant water sources are precipitation, ground water discharge, and both interflow and overland flow from adjacent uplands. The direction of flow is normally from the surrounding uplands toward the center of the depression.

It is one of several critical habitat areas identified in the North American Waterfowl Management Plan. This plan created in 1986 by the United States and Canada and joined in 1988 by Mexico, is a partnership of local citizens, private companies, conservation organizations, and government agencies.
