UPLIFT FORCE [4 records]

Record 1 2014-10-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Physics)
  • Dams and Causeways
DEF

The upward pressure against the base of an impervious dam, transmitted by water in the foundation from the water behind the dam, or pressure on the upper surface of any horizontal joint or crack in a dam. Such pressure tends to offset the weight of the dam and in some cases to overturn it; it reduces the dam’s stability or resistance to overturning.

DEF

Pressure in an upward direction against the bottom of a structure, as a dam, a road slab, or a basement floor.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mécanique des fluides et hydraulique (Physique)
  • Barrages et chaussées
DEF

Record 2 2011-01-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Vulcanology and Seismology
CONT

Another thermal force that can induce rifting is from more acute magmatism that penetrates towards the surface. Penetrative magmatism produces uplift at the surface in about 20 Ma, whereas thermal isostasy is a broader, slower process taking about 100 Ma to uplift the surface... Thermal isostasy lags in time because rock is a poor conductor of heat, and penetrative magmatism fractures and heats the surrounding material rapidly.

CONT

Remnants of the mountains formed during subduction before the collision may be preserved in the central part of the belt, but after intense metamorphism and pervasive magmatism, their original nature may be hard to reconstruct.

OBS

pervasive magmatism: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

  • Long-Distance Pipelines
OBS

The term "uplift resistance" as used in connection with frost heaving of a chilled pipeline, is the amount of upward force required to move a pipe through the soil around it.
