DEF

A type of outdoor lighting which consists of lighting along shrub borders to display night-time colours and textures.

CONT

Accent lighting is most frequently associated with spot lighting a landscape subject; however, accents can be accomplished by any number of techniques. The chief component of any accent effect is sharp contrast with the surrounding elements. For this reason, accents can be achieved not only by spotlighting, but by uplighting, downlighting, or any other combination of methods that will provide a sharp contrast.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Landscape Architecture
  • Illumination Engineering
DEF

Landscape lighting where the light source is usually near the ground and shining upwards in order to illuminate trees, fences and signs.

CONT

Uplighting is one of the most striking of all lighting effects, because the light direction is counter to the normal daylight experience. It is most often used to accent plants or other landscape features. This lends a glowing silhouette effect to the object since there is a high contrast between outline and horizontal surfaces.

DEF

A type of outdoor lighting using a light source at eye-level or above that is used to illuminate the ground or other site elements.

OBS

Definition based on source a.

CONT

Downlighting is not as unusual as uplighting because the eye is more accustomed to this condition. The primary feature is the ability to create texture patterns on the ground plane by directing the light through foliage or other overhead structures. It also provides a high contrast between upper and lower surfaces of foliage that can sometimes be used to good advantage.

"L'éclairage vers le bas" indique que la source de lumière est située à la hauteur des yeux ou plus haut et illumine le sol ou [les] autres éléments du terrain.
