That warmest part of a slope above a valley floor lying between the layer of cold air that forms over the valley floor on calm, clear nights and the cold hilltops or plateaus. 3, record 1, English, - frostless%20zone
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Silas McDowell (1795-1879) was a southern pomologist and a botanist of renown ... during the 1850s. ... He was the originator of the "thermal belt" concept which is a zone on a mountainside where frost and freezes are less common than in the valleys and on the mountaintops. 4, record 1, English, - frostless%20zone
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The air flowing down the slopes is warmed by mixing with the air above ground level and to some extent also by adiabatic compression. The frostless zone is not a fixed belt but varies in level from night to night and season to season according to the initial temperature, the length of the night, and the clearness of the sky. Its lower limit is sometimes clearly marked by the upper limit of frost damage to crops, following the hillsides at a small angle to the horizontal. 3, record 1, English, - frostless%20zone

Cloud chambers were first developed by Charles T.R. Wilson around 1911 for experiments on the formation of rain clouds. Wilson knew that water vapour condensed around ions, atoms which have become charged by gaining or losing electrons. However, an alpha particle, for example, which had an electric charge, would leave a trail of ions as it passed through a gas. If water vapour condensed on these ions, the track of the alpha particle would become visible as a line of water droplets. 2, record 17, English, - Wilson%20cloud%20chamber

There are two basic types of cloud chambers in use today;(1) the expansion chamber... which depends upon expansion of the air, within the chamber, to cool it and thus create a supersaturated atmosphere, and(2) the continuous or diffusion type chamber..., that creates a supersaturated atmosphere by diffusion of vapor from the warm upper region of the chamber to the cooled bottom of the chamber. In both types, electrically charged ions created by nuclear particles colliding with atoms within the chamber atmosphere, serve as nuclei of condensation. 5, record 17, English, - Wilson%20cloud%20chamber

Combustion Override Split Production Horizontal Well Process(COSH). The main feature of this process, developed by the Alberta Research Council(ARC), is implementation of gravity drainage using a basal horizontal well in a combustion process. The configuration of different wells is critical to the operation of this process. A linear configuration of vertical air injection wells is drilled and completed in the upper portion of the reservoir. A horizontal oil production well is completed in the bottom of the reservoir, aligned and positioned beneath the vertical injection wells. The reservoir is prepared for ignition and combustion is initiated at each of the injection wells. A hot fluid-transmissive chamber is formed around each of the injection wells as combustion proceeds. Combustion gas communication is established with the gas production wells. Heated oil and water, produced by the combustion front in each hot chamber, drains under the effect of gravity and is brought to the surface through the horizontal production well. 3, record 18, English, - combustion%20override%20split%20production%20horizontal%20well%20process

2, record 18, French, - combustion%20in%20situ%20avec%20puits%20de%20production%20horizontal

The Aircraft to Satellite Data Relay(ASDAR) programme is sponsored by an International meteorological group in order to augment the collection of upper air meteorological data, and thereby improve the accuracy of global weather forescasting. It has been developed by Matra Marconi Space, UK in collaboration with the WMO to enable aircraft to generate and transmit real-time meteorological reports via geostationary meteorological satellites for global relay. It is an automated system offering significant advantages, including reduced crew responsibility delays and errors. ASDAR, operating in conjunction with meteorological satellites, has proved to be a versatile tool in obtaining meteorological data automatically from flights over both oceans and continents, especially over areas not serviced by meteorological stations. In addition, during the ascent and descent phases of the aircraft, observations at regular pressure intervals provide a detailed vertical atmospheric temperature profile near the airports. The meteorological data provided by this system has proved to be very useful for improving the weather forecasting service. 1, record 20, English, - Aircraft%20to%20Satellite%20Data%20Relay

Wind turbine blades are essentially airfoils. When air flows past the blade, a wind speed and pressure differential is created between the upper and lower blade surfaces. The pressure at the lower surface is greater and thus acts to "lift" the blade. When blades are attached to a central axis, like a wind turbine rotor, the lift is translated into rotational motion. 5, record 23, English, - lift%2Dtype%20wind%20turbine

The slotted flap is like the Fowler flap in operation, but in appearance it is similar to the plain flap. This flap is equipped with either tracks and roller or hinges of a special design. Even the seemingly small level of disagreement between surface and deep layer temperature trends can not be reproduced by current GCMís, which slave globally-averaged deep tropospheric temperatures to any surface temperature fluctuations... However, we know that convective air currents and the air-conditioning effects of water cause the atmospheric temperature profile to change by a much larger amount, about 80 deg. C, between the surface and 10 km altitude when compared to a hypothetical Earth without these processes... Thus, it is critical to validate whether the parameterizations of moist convective processes in GCMís are realistic enough to capture the ways in which the tropospheric temperature profile fluctuates naturally in response to this transport of heat from the surface to the upper troposphere. 1, record 42, English, - tropospheric%20temperature%20profile

Forced inspiration is caused by the contraction of muscles in the upper chest, such as the sternocleidomastoids & scalenes. These muscles pull the chest up and out even more, further decreasing the intrapleural pressure so that even more air will rush into the lungs to fill the void. 2, record 43, English, - forced%20inspiration
Record number: 43, Textual support number: 2 CONT
In a healthy subject everything works together to create large flows during a forced inspiration: 1 The greater the inspiratory force applied, the lower the alveolar pressure relative to pressure at the mouth, and the larger the flow into the lung. 2 During a forced inspiration the (subatmospheric) pleural pressure outside intrathoracic airways is lower than bronchial pressure. The pressure difference is largest at the thoracic outlet and smallest in small intrapulmonary airways. Hence large intrathoracic airways ... are subjected to a considerable distending force, and this helps in generating high inspiratory flows. 3, record 43, English, - forced%20inspiration

The use of flaps located on the trailing edge of an airplane wing to vary wing lift characteristics during various flight phases is well known. In the so-called single slotted flap arrangement, a wing flap is extended relative to the stationary wing of the aircraft so that a spanwise slot is formed between the trailing edge of the wing and the leading edge of the flap. This slot directs airflow from below the wing and the flap for subsequent discharge across the upper surface of the flap in the direction of and substantially parallel to the air normally flowing over the upper surface of the flap. 2, record 44, English, - single%20slotted%20flap

Depth hoar [are] large coarse recrystallized grains of snow that are the end result of the faceting or squaring process within the snowpack, a process driven by temperature gradients. Such crystals are often weak and develop as a result of(locally) strong temperature gradients and resulting vapor pressure differences in the snowpack, especially in shallow snowpacks with cold air temperatures. These grains are formed through re-crystallization of existing snow grains as water vapor is transferred(sublimation and deposition) from warmer regions of higher vapor pressure(near the ground) to colder regions with lower vapor pressure(upper layers closer to the snow surface). 6, record 50, English, - depth%20hoar

Heat lows or thermal troughs often build north along the coasts of California and Oregon in the summer. Thermal troughs can cause "east winds" in the Washington and Oregon Cascades. If however, a relatively strong disturbance in the upper atmosphere moves across the NW, it will force the thermal trough east of the Cascades. In most cases, a moderate to strong push of marine air will follow, along with strong, gusty, west winds along the east slopes of the Cascades. Gusty winds and thunderstorms can be associated with the passage of a thermal trough. 2, record 51, English, - thermal%20trough

The primary problem solved by the sugar centrifugal... is to completely prevent the formation of lumps in centrifuging the crystals in continuously operating centrifugals. To solve this problem, the upper end of the centrifugal basket is encircled by a fixed intercepting ring, wherein the introduced liquid rotates with a circumferential speed which is lower than the speed of the centrifugal basket. The rotation of the liquid ring or of the liquid-crystal mixture formed in this ring is produced by the air friction caused by a discharge flange which, depending to the type product, dips more or less into the intercepting ring and is secured to the centrifugal basket. 2, record 52, English, - sugar%20centrifugal

Kelvin-Helmholtz wave clouds are formed when there are two parallel layers of air that are usually moving at different speeds and in opposite directions. The upper layer of air usually moves faster than the lower layer because there is less friction. In order for us to see this shear layer, there must be enough water vapor in the air for a cloud to form. Even if clouds are not present to reveal the shear layer, pilots need to be aware of invisible atmospheric phenomenon.... upper-air observation. This is a general term, but is usually applied to those observations that are used in the analysis of upper-air charts(as opposed to measurements of upper-atmospheric quantities primarily for research). Among the elements evaluated are pressure, temperature, relative humidity(e. g., by radiosonde aircraft observations), and wind speed and direction(e. g., by rawinsonde, aircraft, or wind profiling radars). Also, some mountain stations are high enough and exposed enough so that their observations may be included in the upper-air network at their elevation. 5, record 58, English, - upper%2Dair%20observation

His experiments led to the development of the cambered aerofoil, a feature that generated much more lift than a flat surface. Put simply, a curved wing surface causes the air traveling over the upper surface to move faster, and travel further, than the air passing along the lower surface of the wing. The air passing over the top surface has a slightly reduced pressure. The greater pressure below the wing exerts an upwards force, called lift, and within certain limits increases with airspeed. 1, record 60, English, - cambered%20aerofoil

The Double Arch Downfired, or W Flame Furnace... is the proven way to efficiently self-combust anthracites in Central Station steam generators.... FW Ball Mills receive coal on each end, from bins and feeders located overhead... Primary air coming from air heaters enters each mill end and dries the coal. Once the coal is ground and classified, the air pneumatically transports it towards the arch cyclone burners... A "W" shaped flame forms in the lower furnace(volume below the arches). Gases then continue their upward move through the conventional upper furnace. In the FW arch fired technology, only a fraction of the air enters the furnace through the arch; the bulk of the air is fed to the furnace through slots in the vertical walls located directly below the arches. 2, record 65, English, - double%2Darch%20furnace%20boiler

1, record 69, French, - r%C3%A9seau%20d%27observation%20en%20altitude

Biological Filter. High-rate treatment can also be obtained in a biological filter system. Biological filtration is a technique for promoting contact between a free-flowing wastewater and a stationary growth of microorganisms in the presence of atmospheric air. The system does not depend on filtration in the usual sense for its effect.... Biological filter systems(such as the trickling filter) have generally proven to be unsuitable for pulp and paper wastewaters, exhibiting even greater instability to waste variability than activated sludge systems. However, the rotary disc system(a more recent design of biological filter) has been successful on a number of wastewaters and appears to deserve consideration for future applications. In this system a biological growth is cultivated on the disc surfaces. A series of closely-spaced corrugated plastic discs are anchored to a rotating shaft and supported above a trough through which the wastewater is channeled at a controlled rate. The lower 30 to 40% of each disc extends into the wastewater, while the upper portion is exposed to air. Thus, an area of biological growth alternates between submergence to absorb food and exposure to air for oxidation. Any number of rotating assemblies can be used in series to achieve the desired degree of BOD removal. 1, record 82, English, - rotary%20disc%20biological%20filter

1, record 82, French, - filtre%20biologique%20%C3%A0%20disques%20rotatifs

The diffusion climatology of the Columbia River valley has been documented by Hewson(1945) but little information is available for most other areas. Hewson's studies indicate that although ground-based radiation inversions may dissipate almost every morning... the pollution potential of a deep valley may become very high during periods when there is not an adequate exchange rate with cleaner air aloft, due to a capping inversion, weak upper winds or insufficient daytime convection. 1, record 92, English, - diffusion%20climatology

Near the coast, the diffusion climatology is even more complex than inland, with interactions between sea-breezes and slope winds. 1, record 92, English, - diffusion%20climatology
