UPPER AIR WIND [8 records]

Record 1 2023-06-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Audio Technology
  • Sonar and Underwater Detection (Military)
  • Fish
  • Commercial Fishing
CONT

The project aims to procure a towed vehicle, carrying acoustic transducers, to observe target strengths and estimate fish abundance... The upper water layer of the ocean contains air bubbles, induced by wind and waves. These air bubbles attenuate the sound transmission and reception from a hull-mounted transducer... The thickness of the bubble layer may be 5-10 [metres], or more, depending on the sea state.

CONT

The upper water layer of the ocean contains air bubbles, induced by wind and waves. These air bubbles attenuate the sound transmission and reception from a hull-mounted transducer... The thickness of the bubble layer may be 5-10 m, or more, depending on the sea state. A towed transducer operates below this bubble layer. The transducer is closer to the fish. This gives a better signal to noise ratio, and also the resolution of single fish is improved because the width of the sound beam is smaller. For the study of deep water biological resources[, ] below 500 m[, ] a towed transducer is essential.

Record 3 2013-01-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electric Rotary Machines - Types
  • Wind Energy
DEF

A vertical-axis wind turbine whose rotor runs through an aerodynamic lift exerted on its blades.

OBS

Wind turbine blades are essentially airfoils. When air flows past the blade, a wind speed and pressure differential is created between the upper and lower blade surfaces. The pressure at the lower surface is greater and thus acts to "lift" the blade. When blades are attached to a central axis, like a wind turbine rotor, the lift is translated into rotational motion.

DEF

[...] éolienne à axe vertical dont le rotor tourne sous l'effet de la portance aérodynamique qui s'exerce sur ses pales.

Subject field(s)

CONT

What is the big deal about having a negative tilt?(1) indicates a low pressure has reached maturity,(2) indicates strong differential advection(middle and upper level cool air advecting over low level warm air advection). This increases thermodynamic instability.(3) Indicates good vertical wind shear.

Subject field(s)

CONT

There is also a surface film community(neuston) which, when richly developed, forms a ’water bloom’. This only occurs on small bodies of water where the surface is protected from wind. The algae, together with some bacteria and invertebrates, become attached to the boundary layer between the air and water, either on the upper surface of the water(epineuston) or on the under surface(hyponeuston).

CONT

[the hyponeuston] are associated with the underside of the film and project into the water below.

French

Domaine(s)

  • Écosystèmes
DEF
