A cloud chamber containing air supersaturated with water vapor by sudden expansion, in which rapidly moving nuclear particles such as alpha or beta rays produced ionization tracks by condensation of vapor on the ions produced by the rays. 4, record 14, English, - Wilson%20cloud%20chamber
Record number: 14, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Cloud chambers were first developed by Charles T.R. Wilson around 1911 for experiments on the formation of rain clouds. Wilson knew that water vapour condensed around ions, atoms which have become charged by gaining or losing electrons. However, an alpha particle, for example, which had an electric charge, would leave a trail of ions as it passed through a gas. If water vapour condensed on these ions, the track of the alpha particle would become visible as a line of water droplets. 2, record 14, English, - Wilson%20cloud%20chamber
Record number: 14, Textual support number: 2 CONT
There are two basic types of cloud chambers in use today;(1) the expansion chamber... which depends upon expansion of the air, within the chamber, to cool it and thus create a supersaturated atmosphere, and(2) the continuous or diffusion type chamber..., that creates a supersaturated atmosphere by diffusion of vapor from the warm upper region of the chamber to the cooled bottom of the chamber. In both types, electrically charged ions created by nuclear particles colliding with atoms within the chamber atmosphere, serve as nuclei of condensation. 5, record 14, English, - Wilson%20cloud%20chamber

The distribution of various physicochemical processes is another criterion [used for denoting the various shells of the atmosphere]. The ozonosphere, lying roughly between 10 and 50 kilometers, is the general region of the upper atmosphere in which there is an appreciable ozone concentration and in which ozone plays an important part in the radiative balance of the atmosphere; the ionosphere, starting at about 70 or 80 kilometers, is the region in which ionization of one or more of the atmospheric constituents is significant; the neutrosphere is the shell below this which is, by contrast, relatively unionized; and the chemosphere, with no very definite height limits, is the region in which photochemical reactions take place. 5, record 15, English, - ozonosphere

... the atmosphere consists of several layers. The layers differ in such physical properties as pressure and the types of gasses. The layer of the atmosphere closest to Earth is called the TROPOSPHERE. ... The layer above the troposphere is called the STRATOSPHERE. The OZONE LAYER is the part of the stratosphere where absorption of ultraviolet rays occurs. The layer above the stratosphere is called the MESOSPHERE. The THERMOSPHERE lies above the mesosphere. The ionized gases form a layer within the thermosphere called the IONOSPHERE. The outermost part of Earth’s atmosphere extends from about 480 km out to 960 km. 3, record 15, French, - ozonosph%C3%A8re

The MLS detects naturally occurring microwave thermal emissions from Earth's limb to create vertical profiles of atmospheric gasses, temperature, pressure and cloud ice. MLS looks 90° from the angle of UARS’ [Upper Atmosphere Research Statellite] orbit. Thermal radiation enters the instrument through a three-mirror antenna system. The antenna mechanically scans in the vertical plane through the atmospheric limb every 65. 5 seconds. The scan covers a height range from the surface up to 90 km(55 miles). Upon entering the instrument, the signal from the antenna is separated into three signals for processing by different radiometers. The 63-GHz radiometer measures temperature and pressure. The 183-GHz radiometer measures water vapor and ozone. The 205-GHz radiometer measures ClO, ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitric acid and water vapor. 2, record 38, English, - microwave%20limb%20sounder

CEDAR is a broad-based, community-initiated, upper atmospheric research program. The goal is to understand the behavior of atmospheric regions from the middle atmosphere upward through the thermosphere and ionosphere into the exosphere in terms of coupling, energetics, chemistry, and dynamics on regional and global scales. These processes are related to the sources of perturbations that propagate upward from the lower atmosphere as well as to solar radiation and particle inputs from above. The activities within this program combine observations, theory and modeling. 2, record 39, English, - Coupling%2C%20Energetics%20and%20Dynamics%20of%20Atmospheric%20Regions

Heat lows or thermal troughs often build north along the coasts of California and Oregon in the summer. Thermal troughs can cause "east winds" in the Washington and Oregon Cascades. If however, a relatively strong disturbance in the upper atmosphere moves across the NW, it will force the thermal trough east of the Cascades. In most cases, a moderate to strong push of marine air will follow, along with strong, gusty, west winds along the east slopes of the Cascades. Gusty winds and thunderstorms can be associated with the passage of a thermal trough. 2, record 40, English, - thermal%20trough

A front may have troughing along its length, but not all troughs are frontal! Indeed, not all troughs have ’weather’ associated with them in the cloud/rainfall sense. Lee troughs found downwind of a major range of hills/mountains are often cloudless, and thermal troughs forming over land during the day due to mesoscale heating may only be found by careful drawing of isobars: if the air is dry and/or stable, little significant cloud will be associated with this feature. 3, record 40, English, - thermal%20trough

The Earth's upper atmosphere, beginning only 10-15 km above the surface, remains a frontier largely unexplored from space. The goal of upper atmosphere research is to understand the chemistry, dynamics, and energy balance above the troposphere as well as the coupling between these processes and between atmosphere regions. This implies an understanding of the mechanisms that control upper atmosphere structure and variability, as well as an understanding of how the upper atmosphere responds to natural and man-made causes. Together, these will help define the role of the upper atmosphere in climate and climate variability. The UARS [Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite] platform provides simultaneous, coordinated measurements of atmospheric internal structure(trace constituents, physical dynamics, radiative emission, thermal structure, density) and measurements of the external influences acting upon the upper atmosphere(solar radiation, tropospheric conditions, electric fields). 2, record 57, English, - Earth%27s%20upper%20atmosphere

Planning of a multi-spectral auroral imaging observatory(AURIO) has been on its way for some years now in the ESA Programme(Stadsnes et al. 1987). In 1990 ESA selected AURIO together with an advanced particle and fields observatory, APAFO, to constitute the Space Science Elements in the Polar Platform Programme, but without accommodating these experiments on the first mission called ENVISAT-1. As of today it is not yet clear when AURIO will be flown. AURIO would provide images of the aurora in the IR, visible and UV-range, and of the X-ray aurora(from few keV to >100 keV) with much better spatial and temporal resolution than yet obtained. Together with the in-situ particle and fields measurements, this would enable studies of fine and medium-scale coupling processes between the magnetosphere and the upper atmosphere. 2, record 63, English, - auroral%20imaging%20observatory

The mercurial barometer... in its simplest form... consists of a glass tube a little more than 30 inches in length and of uniform internal diameter. With one end closed, the tube is filled with mercury, and inverted into a cup of mercury. The mercury in the tube falls until the column is just supported by the pressure of the atmosphere on the open cup, leaving a vacuum at the upper end of the tube. The height of the column indicates atmospheric pressure, greater pressures supporting higher columns of mercury. The mercurial barometer is subject to rapid variations in height, called pumping, due to pitch and roll of the vessel and temporary changes in atmospheric pressure in the vicinity of the barometer. Because of this... the mercurial barometer has been replaced at sea by the aneroid barometer. 4, record 76, English, - pumping

Returning to the Earth involves the problem of decreasing the spacecraft's great speed. To do this, an orbiting spacecraft uses small rockets to redirect its flight path into the upper atmosphere. Canadian Space Agency(CSA). CANOPUS : Canadian Auroral Network for the OPEN Program Unified Study. CANOPUS consists of a network of automatic data collection stations in West-Central Canada, transmitting data by satellite telemetry to a central data analysis centre in Ottawa, by means of which the powerful effects of solar activity on the ionosphere and upper atmosphere can be observed with minimum delay and studied in a systematic manner. CANOPUS was designed as an integral part of the Global Geospace Science Mission(GGS) organized by NASA as part of the International Solar-Terrestrial Physics Program(ISTP). CANOPUS was accepted by NASA as a component of GGS program on an equal footing with comprehensive sets of intruments on three on spacecraft(GEOTAIL, WIND and POLAR). The ISTP also includes the ESA CLUSTER satellites, SOHO and the Russian INTERBALL satellites... The system name, CANOPUS, was originally an acronym based on the role of the project as a component experiment of the NASA OPEN program. OPEN has now been renamed GGS and integrated into the International Solar Terrestrial Physics program which involves NASA, ESA and ISAS(the Japanese Space Agency). Since the project has become widely known as CANOPUS the name has been retained to avoid any possible confusion. 1, record 88, English, - CANOPUS%20Project

Agence spatiale canadienne (ASC). 1, record 88, French, - CANOPUS%20Project
