UPPER BLADE [19 records]

Record 1 2024-10-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Diagnostic Procedures (Medicine)
  • Musculoskeletal System
CONT

Mid-upper arm circumference(MUAC) is measured in adults and children, to the nearest 0. 1 cm [centimeter], using a flexible nonstretch tape laid at the midpoint between the acromion and olecranon processes on the shoulder blade and the ulna, respectively, of the arm... MUAC is a measure of the sum of the muscle and subcutaneous fat in the upper arm. In severe malnutrition both fat and muscle are reduced in the upper arm.... MUAC can be used as an indicator of body composition in adults and children. Since MUAC increases little between the age of 6 months and 5 years, it can be used in preschool children as an age-independent screening tool for severe malnutrition.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electric Rotary Machines - Types
  • Wind Energy
DEF

A vertical-axis wind turbine whose rotor runs through an aerodynamic lift exerted on its blades.

OBS

Wind turbine blades are essentially airfoils. When air flows past the blade, a wind speed and pressure differential is created between the upper and lower blade surfaces. The pressure at the lower surface is greater and thus acts to "lift" the blade. When blades are attached to a central axis, like a wind turbine rotor, the lift is translated into rotational motion.

Record 3 2010-10-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Paddle Sports
CONT

There is one other stroke for paddling a straight course that should be covered here. It is a very useful stroke for paddling in a strong wind, running rapids, and paddling silently to sneak up on animals. It is called the indian stroke or underwater stroke and is an extension of the Canadian stroke. As the paddle knifes forward, the grip of the paddle is rotated in the palm of your upper hand. The rotation makes it possible to bring the paddle around, ready for the next power stroke without taking the blade out of the water, it's a very nice stroke to know because with the paddle remaining in the water, the canoeist is in control throughout the entire stroke.

Record 4 2010-10-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Paddle Sports
CONT

At the end of the J stroke, the paddle is kniffed forward underwater with the power face of the paddle almost flat and facing up. Steering is accomplished by pulling up on the blade as it is brought forward. About halfway through the recovery, the paddle is allowed to slip out of the water in readiness for the next power stroke. The trick is getting a very slight angle on the blade as it comes forward. If the angle is wrong the paddle will plane out of the water or drive too deep. The angle is controlled by the upper hand.

OBS

It used to be called the kniffing J but American canoeists began referring to it as the Canadian stroke. Most Canadians are happy to go along with this name because it is such a beautiful stroke.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sports de pagaie
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

A stability test of the upper snowpack in which a person taps a shovel placed on top of a column of snow.

CONT

The compression test finds most weak layers in the upper part of the snowpack and helps rate their stability... To start this test, use a shovel, snow saw, ski or snowboard to cut a square column with sides 30 centimetres(12 inches) wide. The column is usually about 1 metre(3 feet) tall. Place a shovel blade on top of the column. Tap with finger tips, about 10 times, moving your hand from the wrist and rate any failure as easy. Tap from the elbow, about 10 times, and rate any failure as moderate. Finally, hit the shovel blade with an open hand or fist, about 10 times, and rate any failure as hard.

CONT

Results from the compression test indicate a weakness down 65 cm. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

compression test: term officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
CONT
