Acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis was first described by Robert Douglas Sweet in 1964(hence the eponym Sweet syndrome). This condition is a reactive process characterized by the abrupt onset of tender, red-to-purple papules and nodules that coalesce to form plaques. These plaques usually occur on the upper extremities, face, or neck and are typically accompanied by fever and peripheral neutrophilia.

Sweet syndrome can be divided into three types on the basis of the underlying trigger. The first and most common type is classic or idiopathic Sweet syndrome ... The second type can manifest aggressively in concert with an underlying malignancy. ... At the end of the J stroke, the paddle is kniffed forward underwater with the power face of the paddle almost flat and facing up. Steering is accomplished by pulling up on the blade as it is brought forward. About halfway through the recovery, the paddle is allowed to slip out of the water in readiness for the next power stroke. The trick is getting a very slight angle on the blade as it comes forward. If the angle is wrong the paddle will plane out of the water or drive too deep. The angle is controlled by the upper hand.

It used to be called the kniffing J but American canoeists began referring to it as the Canadian stroke. Most Canadians are happy to go along with this name because it is such a beautiful stroke.

The growth and extension of sand-shell ridges at salt marsh edges are effects which appear to be common at intervals in the history of many tidal flats. On the open coastline of southwestern Louisiana these ridges, or "cheniers", are known to extend in uninterrupted fashion for 48 km with average widths of 180 m and thicknesses of 2 m(...) The features common to all cheniers, whether large or small, is that they consist of a mixture of sand and shells transported from adjacent intertidal and subtidal areas. On the seaward face during active growth they rest on upper tidal flat sediments, whereas on the landward face they interdigitate with and rest unevenly on salt marsh sediments. The structures are usually asymmetrical with the steeper side facing landward; this is the direction in which they tend to move.
