A gaff sail is a fore-and-aft sail with four corners and four edges. The lowest edge is called the foot and is attached to a horizontal spar called a boom. The vertical edge that is attached to the mast is called the luff; the upper edge is called the head and is attached to a spar called a gaff. The remaining edge is the leech. Combustion Override Split Production Horizontal Well Process(COSH). The main feature of this process, developed by the Alberta Research Council(ARC), is implementation of gravity drainage using a basal horizontal well in a combustion process. The configuration of different wells is critical to the operation of this process. A linear configuration of vertical air injection wells is drilled and completed in the upper portion of the reservoir. A horizontal oil production well is completed in the bottom of the reservoir, aligned and positioned beneath the vertical injection wells. The reservoir is prepared for ignition and combustion is initiated at each of the injection wells. A hot fluid-transmissive chamber is formed around each of the injection wells as combustion proceeds. Combustion gas communication is established with the gas production wells. Heated oil and water, produced by the combustion front in each hot chamber, drains under the effect of gravity and is brought to the surface through the horizontal production well.

L'allumage de l'air provoque la combustion de l'oxygène contenu dans l'air au contact de l'huile qui, elle, est oxydée. Par rapport à un procédé conventionnel de combustion où le front de combustion se propage entre deux puits distants horizontalement de plusieurs dizaines de mètres, l'idée proposée ici est de voir se créer un front de combustion qui se propage de haut en bas dans un réservoir entre un puits vertical situé en haut du réservoir dans la couche imprégnée d'huile et un puits horizontal situé en bas du réservoir. L'air étant composé d'azote et l'oxygène, quand la combustion a lieu, elle a pour effet de voir disparaître l'oxygène qui réagit avec l'huile pour donner une huile oxydée, du CO2 et de l'eau. Reste l'azote qui par gravité va rester sous forme de chapeau de gaz (ou «gas cap») dans la partie supérieure du réservoir. Pour évacuer cet azote et éviter qu'il ne fasse cesser la combustion, il est proposé de le produire par des puits verticaux situés latéralement par rapport aux deux puits déjà cités. Ce procédé a été testé au laboratoire mais n'a pas été validé sur champ. [Source : Institut français du pétrole, 2002.]

The above photo shows a halo phenomenon known as the upper tangent arc. When cirrus clouds contain columnar ice crystals aligned so that their axes are all in a horizontal direction, this type of arc may be produced. A characteristic of this arc-shaped patch of light is that it's directly above the Sun(it bends upward away from the Sun), and it's approximately 22 degrees away from the Sun itself-about 2 fists held at arms length.

The 22° halo is most common, but other halo forms are sometimes seen. The tangent arcs to the 22° halo can appear if the sun’s declination is less than 32°. One is called the lower tangent arc to the 22° halo, and the other is the upper tangent arc to the 22° halo. The shape of these tangent haloes depends upon the sun’s declination. If the sun is close to the horizon, the two upper arcs angle sharply away from the 22° halo. As the sun rises higher in the sky, the tangent arcs move toward the 22° halo. When the sun’s declination reaches 32°above the horizon, the lower and upper tangent arcs make contact, and the resulting ring is called the circumscribed halo. It touches the 22° halo above and beneath the sun. When the sun is just above 32°the circumscribed halo resembles a double oval. As the sun rises higher it becomes increasingly circular and draws nearer to the 22° halo. When the sun’s declination exceeds 70°, the circumscribed arc nearly coincides with the 22° halo.

Polar-night jet stream. This jet meanders through the upper stratosphere over the poles. It occurs only during the long winter night. Remember, night is 6 months long over the pole in which winter is occurring. The polar stratosphere undergoes appreciable cooling due to the lack of solar radiation. The horizontal temperature gradient is strongly established between the equator and the pole, and the pressure gradient creates this westerly jet. The temperature gradient breaks down intermittently during middle and late winter in the Northern Hemisphere; therefore, the jet is intermittent at these times. In the Southern Hemisphere the temperature gradient and jet disappear rather abruptly near the time of the spring equinox.
