UPPER LEVEL DIVERGENCE [3 records]

Record 1 2012-12-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
CONT

Record 2 2003-07-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorology
DEF

Progressive drawing apart of the streamlines in the direction of flow.

OBS

Difluence in an upper level wind field is considered a favorable condition for severe thunderstorm development(if other parameters are also favorable). But difluence is not the same as divergence. In a difluent flow, winds normally decelerate as they move through the region of difluence, resulting in speed convergence which offsets the apparent diverging effect of the difluent flow.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Météorologie
DEF

Record 3 2002-05-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Level in the atmosphere at which the horizontal divergence is near zero.

CONT

An operational forecaster locates regions of upper level divergence by locating the divergence sector of a vorticity gradient near the LND(Level of Non-divergence). The LND is closest to the mandatory level of 500 mb, thus upper level vorticity is usually plotted on this prog. The LND is the general level that separates the low levels of the troposphere from the upper levels. Vorticity advection is best assessed near the LND.

OBS

level of non-divergence... It is generally situated at about 600 hPa, the horizontal divergence having opposite signs in the lower and upper troposphere.

Key term(s)
  • non-divergence level
  • non divergence level

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF
