Urban greening encompasses a wide variety of policy options that can affect the urban environment. Urban greening involves the relationship between the urban natural environment(including the air, water, soil, wildlife and vegetation) and the urban built environment(including urban buildings, transportation systems, energy systems, and other components necessary to support modern urban living). Urban greening policy initiatives can incorporate topics such as : brownfield redevelopment; green building efforts; green and living streets initiatives; solid waste management; urban agriculture; urban energy sources and renewable energy initiatives; urban greenways and trail systems; urban open space and park systems; urban forestry; watershed and urban water management; or wildlife habitat and management.

[Avant d'admettre ces eaux] dans un réseau d'égout urbain [...] il y a lieu de respecter un certain rapport de volume et de charge polluante entre ces eaux résiduaires et les eaux vannes [...]

Since alteration means change, change in the environment is synonymous with alteration. In this case, it is a change for the worse. Often the effects of alteration are neither immediately discernible nor accurately predictable. Who can foresee what will happen to a 1970 American baby who is born in an air-conditioned hospital, taken home in an air-conditioned car, reared in an air-conditioned apartment, schooled in an air-conditioned school and amused by recreational activities in an air-conditioned bubble? This unnatural alteration of normal rises and falls in daily temperature may result in eventual genetic changes. And what alteration is being wrought on the urban atmosphere during the summer while hundreds of thousands of air-conditioned apartments and homes pump their waste heat out into the atmosphere and the occupants undergo alteration of temperature and humidity inside? Undesirable levels of pollutants-toxic and otherwise-of course cause alteration of air, water and soil.

Larousse].

Town-Country Symbiosis in Calcutta. Historically, the city's eastward expansion halted west of a marginal zone of low lying marshlands, variously known as Dhapa, East Calcutta, or the area of the salt water lakes. Here a symbiotic, creative relationship exists between town and country. With the participation of the rural inhabitants, much of the solid trash, liquid sewage, and polluted air generated by the metropolis of over ten million inhabitants is recycled into organic nutrients, fresh water, and clean air. The system reduces urban waste, creates a daily supply of fresh fish and green vegetables for Calcutta's kitchens, and generates employment and revenue for East Calcutta's thirty-odd villages.
