It wasn’t until the 1980's when a new material, GaAlAs(gallium aluminum arsenide) was developed, that a rapid growth in the use of LEDs began to occur. GaAlAs technology provided superior performance over previously available LEDs. The brightness was over 10 times greater than standard LEDs due to increased efficiency and multi-layer, heterojunction type structures. The voltage required for operation was lower resulting in a total power savings. The LEDs could also be easily pulsed or multiplexed. This allowed their use in variable message and outdoor signs. LED were also designed into such application as bar code scanners, fiber optic data transmission systems, and medical equipment. Although this was a major breakthrough in LED Technology, there were still significant drawbacks to GaAlAs material. First, it was only available in a red 660nm wavelength. In Canada, a Special Threat Assessment Group(STAG) was formed in 1976 as an interdepartmental committee to assess, prevent, contain or otherwise assist in the response to terrorist threats and incidents involving the use of nuclear, biological, or chemical agents. Chaired by an official of Health Canada, it is comprised of medical professionals and scientists charged with assessing a threat's credibility, feasibility, magnitude and potential of likely consequences, as well as helping to identiy the medical and physical resources required to respond. In addition, there is a Nuclear, Biological and Chemical(NBC) Response Team belonging to the Canadian Forces, attached to the NBC School at CFB Borden, Ontario. It is capable of providing on-site advice and technical assistance in isolating, containing, and assessing the hazard; providing any necessary first aid and removal of casualties; collecting and packaging samples for later analysis; and supervising decontamination or clean-up operations. A cause of non-ideal flows in biochemical reactors. It is caused by excessive pressure drops, irregular packing of the support and the uneven application of the substrate to the column. The 12-hour clock is a time conversion convention in which the 24 hours of the day are divided into two periods called “ante meridiem”(“a. m., ” English :"before mid day") and “post meridiem”(“p. m., ” English :"after mid day"). Each period consists of 12 hours numbered : 12(acting as zero), 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. … Confusion at noon and midnight.... The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, states : To avoid confusion, the correct designation for twelve o’clock is 12 noon or 12 midnight. Alternatively, the twenty-four-hour-clock system may be used. … In the United States, noon is often called "12 : 00 p. m. "and midnight "12 : 00 a. m. "With this convention, thinking of "12" as "0" makes the system logical. The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language(Fourth Edition, 2000) has a similar usage note on this topic :"Strictly speaking, 12 a. m. denotes midnight, and 12 p. m. denotes noon, but there is sufficient confusion over these uses to make it advisable to use 12 noon and 12 midnight where clarity is required. "Many U. S. style guides(including the NIST website) recommend that it is clearest if one refers to "noon" or "12 : 00 noon" and "midnight" or "12 : 00 midnight"(rather than to "12 : 00 p. m. "and "12 : 00 a. m. ", respectively). … The use of "12 : 00 midnight" or "midnight" is still problematic because it does not distinguish between the midnight at the start of a particular day and the midnight at its end. To avoid confusion and error, some U. S. style guides recommend either clarifying "midnight" with other context clues, or not referring to midnight at all. For an example of the latter method, "midnight" is replaced with "11 : 59 p. m. "for the end of a day or "12 : 01 a. m. "for the start of the next day. That has become common in the United States in legal contracts and for airplane, bus, or train schedules, though some schedules use other conventions. The 24-hour clock notation avoids all of those ambiguities by using 00 : 00 for midnight at the start of the day and 12 : 00 for noon. The origin of the circular connector can be traced to the early days of the motion picture industry, as studio lighting required a connector that could not be accidentally disengaged. The xenon ion propulsion system, or XIPS(pronounced "zips"), is the culmination of nearly four decades of research into the use of electric propulsion as an alternative to conventional chemical propulsion.... the increased efficiency possible with XIPS allows for a reduction in propellant mass of up to 90% for a satellite designed for 12 to 15 years operation. Less propellant results in reduced cost for launch, an increase in payload, or an increase in satellite lifetime, or any combination of the above.... The on-board XIPS system is used primarily for spacecraft stationkeeping. Small thrusts are required to correct for the tug of solar or lunar gravity and to reposition the satellite in its proper orbit and altitude. A satellite's lifetime as well as its launch weight is thus determined by the amount of fuel aboard for its thruster system. While most current satellites use a chemical bipropellant propulsion system, a XIPS-equipped satellite instead uses the impulse generated by a thruster ejecting electrically charged particles at high velocities. The Orlan spacesuit was used for Russian EVA's on Salyut, Mir, and the International Space Station. It was designed by the Zvezda OKB [Russia : Experimental Design Bureau], and derived from the Kretchet suit intended for use on the lunar surface. It consisted of flexible limbs attached to a one-piece rigid body/helmet unit. The suit was entered through a hatch in the rear of the torso. The exterior of the hatch housed the life support equipment. Maximum operation time was three hours when the Orlan-D version of the suit was first used on Salyut 6. Later Orlan-DM versions of the suit increased this period to nine hours. The integrated design meant that no external hoses were required as in the American space suits. The suit standard pressure was 0. 40 atmospheres, so that a prebreathe period of only 30 minutes was required. Electrical power and communications were via an umbilical cord to the station. In the Meteorological Products Extraction Facility(MPEF) meteorological products are operationally extracted from METEOSAT image data for use in forecasting and research work. The extraction is performed in an automatic processing scheme and includes an automatic quality control step as an integral part of the processing. The products are produced in near real time on a networked system of HP Apollo workstations running proprietary software. The system runs in "chains" where two workstations operate together to produce all products. Arid climates required the development of irrigation technology and because of the scarcity and great value of water, desert societies made early use of this technology to incorporate water into their gardens as a decorative feature.
