Synthetic gene drives are a new form of genetic engineering that overcomes the normal rules of inheritance, and which may allow the deliberate eradication or modification of species and populations in the wild. Gene drives distort the process of inheritance so that the probability of particular genes—and thus specific traits—being passed on is increased substantially above the usual 50%(known as the Mendelian rule of inheritance). Over the course of several generations, genes with higher inheritance rates will rapidly spread through a breeding population... Thus, in theory at least, a gene drive can be employed to force genetic changes into an entire population. 4, record 2, English, - synthetic%20gene%20drive
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
gene drive: In English, a differentiation is sometimes made between a synthetic gene drive, a bioengineered process, and a natural gene drive, a natural process of inheritance. Consequently, it may be preferable to use the designations "synthetic gene drive" and "engineered gene drive" when referring to the bioengineered process. 5, record 2, English, - synthetic%20gene%20drive

Il s'agit en effet de violer les fameuses lois de Mendel pour répandre un caractère donné dans l'ensemble d'une population. Various factors contribute to wind turbine induced bird mortality, such as the wind turbine design and arrangement, bird species, and climatic variables.... The bird mortality rate increased in areas where turbines are located on ridges, on upwind slopes, or close to the bird migration routes. For example, if a wind farm is on a bird migratory route, birds have to avoid the wind farm and deviate from their usual route. The extra deviation work will increase the energy expenditure of the birds and reduce their survival rates. This wind farm barrier effect on birds is species-specific. 1, record 3, English, - wind%20farm%20barrier%20effect

Active grille shutters, which improve efficiency by opening and closing automatically to control airflow, are popping up on a number of new [car] models... When they’re open, the shutters allow air to flow through the radiator and into the engine compartment, as usual, to promote cooling. But when that cooling air is not needed, the shutters close, rerouting air around the vehicle to lessen aerodynamic drag and reduce fuel consumption. As an added bonus, closed shutters also reduce warm-up time in cold weather. 7, record 52, English, - active%20radiator%20grille%20shutters

Solid perfumes, as the name implies, are a clever way of delivering your favorite scent in a solid state rather than the usual liquid mix of ethanol(alcohol) and water. In most cases, this is achieved by mixing the concentrated perfume oil with melted wax. It was the French Emperor, Napoleon III, who first seemed to appreciate the disastrous position that would be the result of a fat shortage and so, in 1867, he commissioned Mége-Mouriés, a French chemist, to "investigate how far it was possible to produce a cheap butter for the Army, Navy and needy classes of the population which would be cheaper and of better keeping quality than the usual butter"... Mége-Mouriés began to experiment... and in 1869 he commenced making his new product in a small factory near Paris. He had noticed that his "near-butter" had a pearly appearance and so he called it margarine from the Greek word "margaron" which means a pearl. 2, record 93, English, - near%20butter

... what makes some extratropical cyclones produce catastrophically damaging winds.... [Keith Browning and Pete Clark] have identified a mesoscale flow which they call the Sting Jet. It originates in the cloud head of a rapidly deepening cyclone and gathers speed as it descends towards the tip of the cloud head when it begins to hook around the cyclone centre... The Sting Jet was first identified observationally from a reanalysis of the Great Storm of October 1987 where the damaging winds were shown to be emanating from the evaporating tip of the hooked cloud head. It has since been reproduced in high-resolution runs with the mesoscale version of the Unified Model. The Sting Jet is distinct from the usual strong-wind region associated with the warm conveyor belt and main cold front. There are indications that conditional symmetric instability and evaporation both play a role in its formation but the importance of these processes remains to be quantified. 4, record 95, English, - sting%20jet

Sting jets occur in cyclones when there is a dramatic fall in the barometric pressure. ... The sting jet is born at an altitude of three miles, within layers of ascending moist air.
