Advanced oxidation processes(AOPs) have been developed for removal of contaminants that are resistant to more typical chemical oxidation treatment processes. They include the use of appropriate combinations of ultraviolet(UV) light, chemical oxidants and catalysts(e. g., ozone, hydrogen peroxide, titanium dioxide) to generate highly reactive radicals, such as hydroxyl radicals, which are strong oxidants and react rapidly and non-selectively with organic contaminants. 2, record 1, English, - advanced%20oxidation%20process

2, record 1, French, - proc%C3%A9d%C3%A9%20d%27oxydation%20avanc%C3%A9e

Record number: 22, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Although heat is also a factor in the deterioration of asphalt on a roof, the real source of decay is the energy carried by the ultra-violet(UV) light of the sun, combined with the ready supply of oxygen in ozone. The "links" in asphalt molecular chains are hydrogen. The molecular bond is overcome by the strong attraction of the oxygen, which pulls the hydrogen away from the asphalt molecules. This process is called photo-oxidation, and these breaks in the "aliphatic" chain results in the shrinkage cracking common to asphalt. This phenomenon is commonly called "alligatoring" in roofing parlance, a term which describes the similarity of aged asphalt surfaces to an alligator's back. 3, record 22, English, - alligatoring

Greenhouse plastics affect tomato pollination by influencing bee activity and bee loss through the ventilation systems. There is a significant difference in bee loss among plastic types.... CT plastic, one of the less commonly used greenhouse plastics, experienced less bee loss than AT Duratherm, Patilux, and both AT Bee Poly and De Klerk together.... The likely explanation for these results is that under CT plastic, bees are less able to visually detect the open vents because of the relatively small contrast between the transmitted light and the light through the vents. Our spectrophotometry results... indicate that of the plastics tested, only CT plastic allows transmission of UV light. Because of this, fewer bees fly out of these greenhouses and die during the winter months. 1, record 23, English, - greenhouse%20plastic

These molecules are called photoinitiators. Two main groups of prepolymers materials are used today [...] Cyclic epoxides, the polymerization of which can be initiated by acids. The shoeboxsized spectrophotometer-called MAESTRO(Measurements of Aerosol Extinction in the Stratosphere and Troposphere Retrieved by Occultation)-is the most advanced in a long line of MSC instruments that have flown on balloons, high-altitude research aircraft and space shuttle missions over the past 10 years. MAESTRO and other spectrophotometers operate on the principle that different gases absorb different wavelengths of light, ranging from short, ultraviolet(UV) rays to long, near-infrared ones. Each gas, therefore, has its own "fingerprint" or distinct spectrum of absorption. This makes it possible to identify which gases are present from changes in the brightness of sunlight at different wavelengths between light coming directly from the Sun and light that has passed through the atmosphere on the way to the spectrophotometer. Ozone, for example, absorbs UV light and is, therefore, essential to preventing high levels of these rays from reaching the Earth's surface. As the Sun rises and sets, its rays slice through different layers of the atmosphere and out into space. MAESTRO will be equipped with more than 2000 separate detectors record the full spectrum of wavelengths emitted by direct sunlight and by sunlight travelling through these layers. These data will then be analyzed to provide precise measurements of gases and aerosol particles at different heights in the atmosphere. SCISAT-1 will orbit the Earth 15 times a day at a height of 650 kilometres, allowing MAESTRO to take measurements of 30 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours. 3, record 30, English, - spectrophotometer%20MAESTRO

2, record 30, French, - spectrophotom%C3%A8tre%20MAESTRO

Factors that affect the ageing of building materials are UV light, temperature, and moisture from RH, precipitation and driving rain. UV radiation probably contributed most to the degradation of the coating and the substrate. Much research is done on the performance of materials due to ageing both by artificial ageing(accelerated) and natural weathering condition(field exposure) of the material. Ahola(1993) studied the effect of ageing on the water vapour permeability and found that the water vapour permeability decreased when exposed to the natural climate for one year. This was interpreted as due to loss of residual solvent, leaching out of low-molecular-mass components, viscous flow of a binder and migration of emulsifiers to the surface. 2, record 38, English, - degradation%20device
