VALID MODEL [5 records]

Record 1 2002-09-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorological Forecasting, Data Measurement and Analysis
  • Air Transport
DEF

Specified period of time to which the conditions stated in a weather forecast refer.

CONT

The Costello Geomagnetic Activity Index model... is a neural network algorithm that was trained on the response of the Kp geomagnetic activity index to solar wind parameters. The model takes the most recent two hours of solar wind data and returns a 3-hour activity index prediction in units of Kp. The valid time of the prediction is indicated on the output graphics by horizontal bars.

CONT

Guide to the Regional [Weather] Forecast Maps ... The "Forecast Period" gives the 24-hour time span for which the plotted data are valid.

CONT

... Weather Forecasting System. ... The operational run schedule is listed in the table below. Each run is identified by three characters followed by the forecast length in hours. The first character is the model identification, and the next two digits are the initial hour. As an example G00+48h means a model "G" analysis at 00 UTC followed by a 48 hours forecast.

DEF

A mathematical model used in human resource planning to determine the numbers and extent of occupational needs in the future based on a set of assumptions involving past relationships. In this application to people planning, the paths of people are traced out as they experience various moves such as promotion, leaving an organization, or joining the organization. The model tracks the movement of people from one state(job or situation) to another and uses math to project both individual and total movements of people into future time periods so long as basic assumptions remain valid.

Brown et al.(1982) reflect on the use of quantitative simulation for making inferences and see it as a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the simulation provides a lot of leverage to the inference process, because large amounts of knowledge are encoded in the model and brought to bear via the simulation. On the other hand, this embedded knowledge is often based on implicit assumptions and empirical decisions on the part of the model' s designers, which may be very subtle. For instance, the formulas used to run the simulation may only be valid for certain classes of inputs. If these assumptions are not made "explicit and checkable", they can easily be violated when the simulation involves faults. For teaching purposes, the main drawback of quantitative simulation is its inability to give a full account of the causality underlying its inferences. Causality is pedagogically important because it is the main ingredient of the kinds of explanations human students can understand. In a troubleshooting context, causality, more than information content, drives the diagnostic reasoning and the decision to perform measurements.

CONT

A model that fits the data better than the forward rate during the estimation period is not necessarily a better ex ante predictor. There seem to be two approaches to making valid comparisons of forecasting performance.

CONT

Un modèle qui explique mieux les données que le cours du terme durant la période d'estimation ne fait pas nécessairement de meilleures prévisions ex ante. Il semble exister deux méthodes valables pour comparer l'efficacité des prévisions.
