3, record 7, French, - ski%2Djoering

Curb feelers or curb finders are springs or wires installed on a vehicle which act as "whiskers" to alert drivers when they are at the right distance from the curb while parking. The devices are fitted low on the body, close to the wheels. As the vehicle approaches the curb, the protruding feelers scrape against the curb, making a noise and alerting the driver in time to avoid damaging the wheels or hubcaps. Adaptive cruise control is similar to conventional cruise control in that it maintains the vehicle's pre-set speed. However, unlike conventional cruise control, this new system can automatically adjust speed in order to maintain a proper distance between vehicles in the same lane. This is achieved through a radar headway sensor, digital signal processor and longitudinal controller. If the lead vehicle slows down, or if another object is detected, the system sends a signal to the engine or braking system to decelerate. Then, when the road is clear, the system will re-accelerate the vehicle back to the set speed. 7, record 27, English, - adaptive%20cruise%20control

The electronic system for access control, driver authorization and immobilization jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and Siemens Automotive is a favorite among purchasers of the new S-Class. The keyless unlocking is brought about by an invisible dialog. As soon as the driver touches a door handle, which doubles as a capacitance sensor, the receiver and transmitter unit integrated in the card is scanned by the "control center" in the vehicle. During this process, the distance between the card and the transmitter located in each door and in the rear bumper must not exceed one meter. The ensuing encrypted data exchange, which is copy-proof, takes place in a matter of milliseconds. If the control unit recognizes the Keyless-Go card, the data is decoded, and the doors are unlocked. 1, record 33, English, - Keyless%20Go

Dead reckoning is a technique of computing the position of a vehicle from its distance and heading measurements. It is an inertial system which uses two independent sensors from which distance and heading information can be extracted. Because each position is relative, cumulative drift errors occur on an average of 2% of the distance traveled. The system consists of a magnetic compass or gyroscope for heading and odometer for distance. Dead reckoning is often combined with map matching to correct for drift errors. It performs well when combined with highly accurate digital maps. It can also be used to back up GPS during satellite visibility outages. 3, record 47, English, - cumulative%20drift

With a part-time/full-time system, users expect to employ four-wheel drive on the highway. But accepted practice held that a planetary or bevel gear differential was needed to prevent generation of wind-up torques on a dry road. Designs without mechanical differentials have long been known to cause particular problems during tight turns and parallel parking, when wheels on one side of the vehicle travel a different distance than wheels on the other side. Forcing all four wheels to operate in synchronization during such maneuvers causes drive-line wind-up. 1, record 48, English, - planetary%20gear%20differential

South Pointing Carriage is the earliest known example of a land vehicle navigation system.... historical research has only recently established that [it] had nothing to do with magnetism, [but] was based on the principle(now called "the differential odometer") that for a given change in vehicle heading, a vehicle's outer wheels travel a mathematically predictable distance farther than the inner wheels. When changing heading, a gear train driven by an... outer wheel automatically engaged and rotated a horizontal turntable to exactly offset the change in heading... a figure with an outstretched arm mounted on the turntable always pointed in the original direction.... 1, record 50, English, - South%20Pointing%20Carriage

1, record 51, French, - grue%20sur%20porteur
