Wakeboarding is a surface water sport which involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a body of water behind a boat. It was developed from a combination of water skiing, snow boarding and surfing techniques. The rider is towed behind a boat; typically at speeds of 18-24 miles per hour depending on water conditions, rider's weight, board size, and all depending on the riders comfort speed.

Le wakeboard. Mélange subtil de surf, de ski nautique et de snowboard, le wakeboard est parfois appelé «wake» ou «planche nautique». Contrairement à la planche de surf, la planche nautique est équipée d'une fixation. Il s'agit d'un sport nautique qui consiste à surfer sur l'eau en se faisant tracter par un bateau; alors qu'à la différence du ski nautique, on n'utilise qu'une planche pour la pratique du wakeboard. Le sportif est habituellement tiré par une corde d'une longueur d'environ 15 m par un bateau naviguant à une vitesse approximative de 35 km/h.

A surfboard-like board used in wakeboarding.

Wakeboards are buoyant with the core usually made up of foam or honeycomb mixed with resin and coated with fiberglass. Metal screws are inserted to attach bindings and fins. The configuration and positioning of the fins and bindings varies according to rider preference and is adjusted for a variety of reasons.

As the governing sport body for water skiing and wakeboarding in Saskatchewan, we work with our national organization Water Ski Canada on behalf of Boaters and Water Ski/Wakeboard enthusiasts across the country. The Nova Scotia Water Ski Association is the official association for towed water sports in the province of Nova Scotia. It is a member association of Sport Nova Scotia. During each summer there are various competitive classic water ski tournaments. The Association is very active in promoting and developing recreational and competitive Slalom, Tricks, Jump, Wakeboard, and much much more.
