A plaza for all seasons. People who live in, work in or visit Hull, Quebec, have a beautiful new public space to enjoy, thanks to a PWGSC [Public Works and Government Services Canada]-managed restoration and redesign project. The newly reopened plaza at Parc du Portage is popular among employees at lunchtime, but is also drawing strollers in the evening and bringing new life into the downtown area. The plaza is located between Phases I and II of the Government of Canada Place du Portage office complex and the provincial/municipal Maison du Citoyen building. The plaza is a few minutes’ walk from the Museum of Civilization, one of the national capital' s major visitor attractions. An underground parking garage owned by the Government of Canada is situated beneath the plaza. The restoration and redesign project had two main components--repair of the waterproof membrane of the garage roof, which had been leaking, and restoration of the plaza. Improvements to the plaza included the addition of more fountains in the pool, and the construction of a low wall around the pool providing places to sit. At night, innovative new lighting casts a shimmering reflection onto the nearby building walls. The plaza should also be a hit in winter because of a versatile design that allows the pool fountains to be dismantled and the pool to be converted into a skating rink. 1, record 2, English, - Parc%20du%20Portage%20plaza

The MSS [Mobile Servicing System] consists of three main elements : the Space Station Remote Manipulator System(SSRMS), known as Canadarm2, the Mobile Base System(MBS), and the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator(SPDM). Canadarm2 and the MBS, its platform, are essential tools for the assembly of the ISS.... The Space Station Remote Manipulator System(SSRMS), known as Canadarm2, is the first component of the Mobile Servicing System. Although similar to the Shuttle Canadarm, this 17-metre manipulator is somewhat larger and incorporates many advanced features, including the ability to self relocate. The arm has the capacity to handle large ISS modules and structural elements. It will initially be used to assemble the Station. In the future, it will capture and dock unmanned resupply spacecraft to the ISS and perform routine maintenance tasks. Canadarm2 will normally move along the Space Station on the Mobile Base System, but it also has the ability to "walk" from place to place by moving from one grapple fixture on the exterior of the structure to the next, like an inchworm.... It is equipped with four television cameras, two mounted on the booms and one near each tip. These cameras feed images to the astronauts operating the arm from the Robotic Workstation inside the Station. An advanced version of the Canadian Space Vision System improves the ability of Canadarm2 operators to keep track of the position, orientation and movement of payloads being grappled. 1, record 3, English, - Canadarm2

12, record 3, French, - Canadarm2

Shake, Rattle & Roll Poster.... Roll :... The long axis of the International Space Station rotates one complete revolution(end-over-end) during each full orbit around the Earth. Student Activity : Place a globe of the Earth on a table near the centre of the room. Walk around the room so that you are always facing the globe. How must you turn in order that you always face the globe? How much must the International Space Station turn during each orbit around the Earth so that it always has the same face "looking" down at the Earth? Student Challenge : Looking down on the Earth's North Pole, the International Space Station orbits the Earth in a counter-clockwise direction(this is the same direction as the Earth turns on its axis). Sketch the Earth(looking down on the North Pole) and add the orbit of the International Space Station. Show the ISS at three or four points during the orbit. Assuming the Sun is to the left of your diagram, what happens to the solar panels as the ISS travels around the Earth? If the ISS "tumbles" as it orbits the Earth, can you figure out how to keep the solar panels always facing the Sun? 1, record 4, English, - roll
