Washing and Scrubbing the Ore. Washing of run-of-mine ore removes obscuring dust and casual dirt from the surface of the pieces and facilitates recognition when hand picking is to be practised. A second effect may be the removal of primary slimes of no value. Clays, colloidal fines, and similar valueless material can easily be taken out at the earlier stages, but may be difficult to remove once fine crushing has liberated a substantial quantity of finely shattered mineral. ... The disintegrating forces used are of a gentle nature, not intended to fracture the ore but simply to tumble particle against particle until the desired amount of cleansing has been accomplished. 2, record 8, English, - scrubbing

In California, thick beds of gravel on the hillsides were worked by hydraulic mining. Powerful jets of water... were passed through giant swivel-mounted nozzles to break down the gravel banks and wash the material through lines of sluices. Although great volumes of water and many miles of pipes and flumes were required, the cost of treatment was only a few cents per cubic yard, which made it possible to work even poor ground at a profit. 3, record 14, English, - wooden%20flume

The countercurrent classifier is an inclined, slowly rotating cylindrical drum with continuous spiral flights attached to the interior of the shell forming helical troughs. Direction of rotation is such that material in the troughs is impelled toward the higher end. The lower end of the shell is closed except for a central overflow opening.(...) Wash water introduced at the upper end drains from the lifting flights above the normal water level and progresses countercurrent to the sand toward the overflow. 3, record 15, English, - countercurrent%20classifier

[In a restricted marine environment] If the climate is arid, evaporation exceeds inflow, and the water becomes hypersaline.... Under conditions of aridity, the restricted sea has adjacent lands with little or no stream action other than torrential episodes which may occasionally wash in detrital material. The sea may attain high temperatures, with excessive evaporation, and development of salinity greater than that of the open sea. Excessive evaporation produces a lowering of water level, and induces a permanent inflowing current of normal sea water across, or through, the restricting barriers.... If it were not for the continued inflow current, the history of restricted seas in arid climates would be short. The water would completely evaporate, leaving behind a relatively thin coating of saline residue. Maintenance of inflow from the open sea provides a continuous supply of dissolved salts, and a balance is reached between evaporation and inflow for given conditions. Inevitably, the concentration of salts within the restricted area is increased and may reach the saturation point for some. 2, record 16, English, - restricted%20arid%20environment

1, record 16, French, - environnement%20restreint%20aride
