It is when one party seeks to terminate the contract before its expiry and pays out the difference between the original contract price and the market price at the time of the washout. It is not a default; it is an agreement between the two parties not to take a contract through to full execution, and to negotiate a payment to compensate the other party for any costs for early termination of the contract. Either the buyer or seller can seek a washout - if no agreement is reached on the washout price, the contract stands.

Multistage bleaching performed in one or two towers. Pulp is pushed through a tower in plug flow; chemicals and wash water are injected to treat the pulp, displace out the solutions of the previous stages and, in turn, are displaced out of the pulp by subsequent stages. This form of bleaching has the advantages of rapid reaction rates, savings in heat and power, and the reduction of the number of towers required for a bleaching sequence. However this technology has been shown to have very high bleach chemical consumption.

The principle of displacement bleaching is illustrated in Figure 11-24, along with its corresponding flowsheet notation. The development of the Kamyr atmospheric diffusion washer allowed the displacement principle to be applied commercially. Kamyr succeeded in mounting a series of diffusion units in a single tower to accomplish a multi-stage bleaching sequence. Typically, the chlorination is carried out at medium consistency and the chlorinated stock is then pumped to the bottom of the displacement tower incorporating stages EDED(Figure 11-27). To ensure that maximum brightness is achieved, some systems now include a second tower which provides longer retention time between the second displacement with chlorine dioxide and the final wash....

The pulping reaction is stopped by extracting the hot residual liquor through screens at the periphery into a flash tank that supplies steam to the steaming vessel. The hot liquor is displaced by upward-flowing "wash liquor"(usually brown stock washer filtrate) which is injected near the bottom of the vessel and moves countercurrent to the chip flow to provide "diffusion washing". The digester is usually provided with sufficient height between the wash liquor inlet and extraction screens to allow at least 1. 5 hours for the residual liquor to diffuse out of the chips.
