CONT

The Boeing Company and Aviation Partners, Inc., of Seattle, Wash., are forming Aviation Partners Boeing, a new joint venture that offers blended winglet technology for in-service Boeing commercial aircraft. Blended winglets are upward-swept tip extensions to aircraft wings.

CONT

Winglets were common on business and commercial jets before Aviation Partners arrived on the scene. But those traditional winglets, found on all Airbus models and the Boeing 747-400, rise at a sharp angle from the wing.... The winglets weigh about 120 pounds each. They are made of high-tech carbon graphite, an advanced aluminum alloy and titanium. The winglet is eight feet long and tapers from its four-foot wide base to a width of two feet at the tip. Unlike traditional winglets typically fitted at abrupt angles to the wing, this new advanced "blended" design gently curves out and up from the wing tip, reducing aerodynamic drag and boosting performance.

OBS

Carbon-treated concrete than can double up as both a structural material and as a sensor.

CONT

Build a stretch of road out of smart concrete, and you can tell when a vehicle is passing over it by measuring the fluctuations in conductivity. Smart concrete can also be used to weigh vehicles as they drive over it, and to monitor trafic levels to the extent of distinguishing between cars and lorries.

CONT

Two spacewalking cosmonauts set up a "Strela, "or "Arrow, "cargo boom outside the Pirs airlock last November. That telescoping crane can be extended to the rear end of the Zvezda crew module. Mounted to the opposite side of Pirs, the Strela boom installed by Onufrienko and Walz is positioned so that it can be reeled out to the end of the Zarya space tug, which is hooked up to the U. S. side of the station. Both booms are capable of hoisting cargoes that weigh as much as three tons. They can be operated either separately or simultaneously to move cargoes or spacewalkers around the outer hull of the Russian half of the outpost.

OBS

The term "Arrow" is the English equivalent of "Strela".

OBS

Strela cargo boom: term officially approved by the International Space Station official approval Group (ISSOAG).
