A closure mechanism on a blow-out preventer stack; a hydraulically operated type of valve designed to close in a well as with a conventional valve or to close on tubing or drill pipe and maintain high pressure contact. Hydraulic pistons push the valves rams against the pipe, one ram on each side, making a pressure-tight contact.

Piston d'acier ou de caoutchouc dur, à fonctionnement hydraulique. Dans les opérations offshore, c'est le piston remplaçable qui ferme le sondage quand on fait fonctionner l'obturateur anti-éruption.

obturateur [en anglais : «blow out preventer; B.O.P.»] : Un obturateur est une sorte de vanne très puissante, à commande hydraulique permettant la fermeture quasi instantanée d'un forage. [...] Il existe des obturateurs à mâchoires formant deux demi opercules et composés de telle façon qu'ils puissent fermer soit sur les tiges, soit sur les joints de tiges soit sur les masses-tiges, soit assurer une fermeture totale et même une coupure instantanée des tiges. Ces obturateurs peuvent être soit simples, soit doubles (deux paires de mâchoires dans un même corps).
