WET AIR OXIDATION [7 records]

Record 1 2015-10-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Wastewater Treatment
CONT

There are two basic processes for thermal treatment of sludges. One, wet air oxidation, is the flameless oxidation of sludges at temperatures of 450 to 550 °F and pressures of about 1200 psig [pounds per square inch gage] The other type, heat treatment, is similar but carried out at temperatures of 350 to 400 ºF and pressures of 150 to 300 psig. Wet air oxidation reduces the sludge to an ash and heat treatment improves the dewaterability of the sludge. The lower temperature and pressure heat treatment is more widely used than the oxidation process.

OBS

The term "sludge" is considered to be an uncountable noun. However, it is often found in the plural form (sludges), particularly when speaking of different types of sludge.

OBS

CONT

Low-temperature thermal processes. Principle: Heat material to several hundreds of degrees to extract volatile compounds, which are then collected and passed to a gas treatment system. Low-temperature thermal processes function with or without oxidizing agents or in the presence of hydrogen or other reducing agents.

CONT

Low-temperature thermal processes include desorption, low-temperature thermal stripping, wet air oxidation and desorption-pyrolysis processes such as AOSTRA-Taciuk.

CONT

CONT

Wet air oxidation is the process of breaking down oxidizable inorganic and organic waste in a high-temperature, high-pressure, aqueous environment. The process is categorized as a low-temperature thermal treatment.

CONT

In the wet air oxidation or wet combustion of sludges, air pressures are raised to 1200 to 1800 psig [pounds per square inch gage-82 to 124 bars] and the accompanying temperature becomes 540°F or more. Under these conditions there is no vaporization of the sludge liquid.... External heat is applied to start oxidation of the organic matter in the sludge. Thereafter, oxidation increases until the rate reaches an equilibrium value.

CONT
