WHEEL HORSE [6 records]

Record 1 2017-03-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cartwright and Wheelwright Trades
DEF

A substantial frame in which the parallel beams which form the bed could be drawn apart to accommodate wheels of larger size. Used for holding a wheel upright during repair....

French

Domaine(s)
  • Charronnage
OBS

Record 3 2011-05-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Horse Racing and Equestrian Sports
DEF

Strap strung inside shafts of sulky to keep the horse swinging the rear end to the right and left and traveling sideways on its gait.

CONT

Gaiting straps are put on a horse to keep his rear end in line. I’ve put them on trotters on both sides. Sometimes they’ll throw their feet out pretty wide into a wheel or the sulky, particularly on a half-mile track where they’re going at a terrific clip around the turns. A lot of good horses that I’ve raced had to wear gaiting straps over a half-mile track. A gaiting strap catches them up along the stifle and keeps them from throwing their foot out.

OBS

A term used in harness racing.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Courses hippiques et sports équestres
OBS

Terme appartenant aux courses attelées.

OBS

Record 4 2010-09-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Horse Racing and Equestrian Sports
  • Games of Chance
DEF

A wager on one or more of the horses [which] must finish a race in a predetermined order while being coupled along with all the other horses in the field that finish the race in the money.

CONT

The idea of an exacta wheel is that when you have one horse to bet in an exacta, you "wheel" him on top of all the other to be 2nd. Exacta wheel wagers may be made in $1 increments. Let's call a wheel bet, with our horse being n° 7. You say :"$2 exacta wheel, n° 7 with all. "

OBS

Wheeling a horse is coupling him with every other horse in the race to win an exacta or quinella, or with every horse in the other race to win a daily double. Obviously, if your "wheel" horse wins, you’re winner since you’ve got all bases covered.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Courses hippiques et sports équestres
  • Jeux de hasard
DEF
