Crizzling can be categorized into several phases or stages. Initially the glass looks cloudy or hazy... but the haziness will not wash off. The glass may also exhibit little white dots or even crystals on the surface if the humidity is under 45%. The first really major breakthrough from an optical-communications viewpoint was made by scientists at Corning Glass Works when they developed fibers based on high silicas.... They achieved these low-loss fibers by a flame-hydrolysis method in which silicon tetrachloride with, if desired, a suitable dopant halide, would react with oxygen to form a white silica soot deposited on a silica mandrel. Rotating the mandrel and translating the flame back and forth causes a buildup of the white soot deposit. By varying the dopant concentration during this buildup, the Corning scientists were also able to achieve a gradient in the composition. Subsequently, the soot is consolidated into a clear glass by an appropriate heat treatment, after which the mandrel is removed. From this "preform", as it is called, a fiber can be drawn, those layers deposited first becoming the core and the later layers the cladding. 1, record 7, English, - flame%2Dhydrolysis%20method

Petuntse. The gallicized form of the Chinese pai-tun-tzu, first employed by Jesuit missionaries in the 18th century to describe the rock which forms an essential part of true porcelain manufacture. It is a silicate of potassium and aluminium, normally referred to as a feldspathic rock. It was first used, about the 3rd century BC, in China for glazing protoporcelain and later, about the 9th century AD, was mixed with kaolin(white china clay) to form the body of the first translucent porcelain. Petuntse is a fusible rock which, fired at a sufficiently high temperature, becomes a natural glass, like obsidian. It gives porcelain both its hardness and translucency. 4, record 24, English, - petuntse

The primary window consideration is its insulating-glass spacer-with traditional highly conductive metal spacers, which leads to lower perimeter edge temperatures. Convection currents further concentrate cold air along the bottom edge of glass, making that area the most vulnerable. Only a warmer edge, all the way around, will strike at the heart of the problem. The world's warmest edge occurs with ENER-SAVE Window's Super Spacer, an insulating white foam spacer whose use allows for comfortable household humidity levels and the least likelihood of mold and other problems. 1, record 29, English, - insulating%2Dglass%20spacer

Although one of the primary aims in durum wheat milling is to produce a speck-free product, bran specks in the final product are unavoidable. If wheat is improperly cleaned, foreign material such as earth pellets or insect fragments may also appear as black specks; kernels damaged by severe smudge, mildew, black point or ergot will also cause speckiness. Since a specky product is undesirable, one test for checking the efficiency of milling is the determination of number of specks per unit area of semolina. The definition of "speck" is not clear cut and differentiation must be made between bran specks and other dark or black specks. Insufficient cleaning of wheat, presence of damaged kernels in low grade wheats, and inefficient purification contribute to speckiness. Normally, the number of specks is reported as specks per 100 square centimetres. 2, record 32, English, - specks

Criteria for judging quality. Flour color : A very simple way to determine color differences in different batches of flour is to look at the color of different types of flour under a sheet of glass. This can be done with more than one flour at a time. This method not only facilitates a comparison of the whiteness of different flours but allows for an inspection for impurities. The flour should have a... "perfectly regular consistency and not contain any specks". This obviously does not pertain to mixed grain or to other than white flours. 3, record 32, English, - specks

1, record 32, French, - piq%C3%BBres%20de%20la%20farine

Findings of the N. C. A. T. Of the eight samples presented, five bear a label claiming to be Crookes Glass. Only two of these possess any physical properties that are similar to the genuine Crookes lens, and even these differ in some fundamental ways. The remaining three, so marked, transmit the same proportion of U. V. as ordinary white spectacle glass. The Chance Crookes lens series sharply reduce the yellow light that you see. Of all colours, yellow is the most dazzling. None of the tested glasses show even a hint of this quality. It is quite clear that the mere label "Crookes", attached to a pair of sunglasses, is valueless unless the seller can guarantee the quality of the lenses they contain. 2, record 34, English, - Crookes%20glass
