CONT

trafficking in women for the purpose of sexual exploitation

OBS

white slave trade; white slave traffic; white slavery : Initially, [white slave trade] referred to trafficking of European and American women for prostitution in western European countries and the USA, and from these countries to the colonies. The Abolitionists, who fought prostitution in Europe and the USA, campaigned against international trafficking; in 1904, thirteen states attended a meeting in Paris, and this resulted in an international agreement against white slavery. In 1949, this agreement was superseded by the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others.

CONT

DEF

An obligate anaerobic or microaerophilic, Gram-positive, spore-forming, rod-shaped bacillus that is one of the most common causes of infection of the large bowel (colon).

OBS

C. difficile is now recognized as the chief cause of nosocomial(hospital-acquired) diarrhea.... Patients taking antibiotics are at risk of becoming infected with C. difficile as antibiotics disrupt the normal bacteria of the bowel and allow C. difficile bacteria to become established in the colon.... Many persons infected with C. difficile bacteria have no symptoms; these people become carriers of the bacteria and can infect others. In other people, a toxin produced by C. difficile causes diarrhea, abdominal pain, severe inflammation of the colon(colitis), fever, an elevated white blood count, vomiting and dehydration.

DEF

The Woodpeckers, numbering about forty persons and also claiming to be Democrats, were the officials and former officials who held office as a result of the black vote for the Republican ticket.
