CONT

CSAR. Microgravity Sciences provided researchers and scientists from Canadian industry and universities with low-cost, high-quality microgravity flight opportunities aboard the Canadian Space Agency Rocket(CSAR), a Black Brandt rocket developed by Bristol Aerospace Ltd. The first rocket, CSAR-1, was launched in March 1992 and carried five experiments; CSAR-2 was launched in December 1994 and also carried five experiments. Both launches took place at the White Sands Missile Range in White Sands, New Mexico. The Canadian experiments onboard, subjected to six minutes of high-quality microgravity conditions, were designed to advance our understanding of the processes and behaviours of materials, which may lead Canada to improving product manufacturing on Earth and enhancing the development of erosion-resistant materials.

CONT

CSAR.

CONT

The Rocket Assembly/Checkout Facility... The facility consists of six contiguous laboratory modules subdivided into a storage area, a gray room area, and a clean room. The storage area houses spare instrument components and intermittently used ground support equipment. The gray room area contains facilities to clean components before they enter the clean room and equipment used to ship the instrument to WSMR [White Sands Mission Range]. The Class 100 cross-flow clean room is separated from the gray room by an air shower. The clean room contains three major stations : a clean bench for assembly of subsystems; a 12x14-ft optical bench for instrument assembly and electronic test of the instrument subsystems; and a vacuum chamber for vacuum focus and spectroradiometric calibration. The cryogenically pumped vacuum chamber is designed with a 30-cm diameter ultraviolet collimator at one end and a roll-off section that accommodates the entire flight instrument centered in the collimated beam at the other end.

CONT

As a result of the larger diameter Vanguard satellite design, the original Aerobee was now too skinny for use as a second stage. A new larger-diameter stage designed by Aerojet-General would have to be used instead. It incorporated an AJ-10 rocket engine that developed 33 kilonewtons(7, 500 pounds) of thrust using the storable propellants inhibited white fuming nitric acid and symmetrical dimethyl hydrazine.

CONT

I have developed several liquid rocket engines using both cryogenic and storable propellants. We have never had a problem with cryogenic propellants(and yes we have never had a LOX valve freeze--you have to use the proper valve). We have shifted over to storable propellants(Inhibited White Fuming Nitric Acid and furfuryl alcohol) because of their high density, hypergolicity, and long term storage capability.

OBS

inhibitor: Substance, naturally occurring or a synthetic additive, whose presence in small amounts in a petroleum product retards or prevents the occurrence of certain phenomena considered undesirable, e.g. gum formation in stored gasolines, corrosion in steam turbines.
