First haulage was provided on the northern ... heading. This was an 18 H.P. steam driven winch, which had two cylinders, each 8 inches in diameter with a 12 inches stroke. It had 2 drums, which operated by clutches. A set of 4 skips was raised or lowered in the heading. Steam was provided by a second-hand Cornish boiler. This boiler was 24 feet long and 5 feet 6 inches in diameter. It had a steel chimney stack, 40 feet high and 2 feet 6 inches diameter, and it was wire stayed.

L'utilité des ballons sur le champ de bataille enfin reconnue, le nombre des compagnies d'aérostiers s'accroît pour atteindre 75 en mars 1916. Chaque corps d'armée français dispose désormais de sa compagnie. La stabilité du sphérique est mauvaise. Pour pallier ce défaut on développe dès 1914 un ballon allongé de 800 m³ semblable au ballon allemand. Pour améliorer son orientation dans le vent on lui attache une queue de godets, comme à un cerf-volant. On remplace le treuil à vapeur par un treuil automobile plus rapide pour ramener le câble et plus discret sur le champ de bataille.

A windlass consisting of a vertical and horizontal spar with a bight of the rope taken around the horizontal spar, which is used to move heavy loads over short distances.

CONT

In making a Spanish windlass, fasten a rope between the load you are to move and an anchorage some distance away. Place a short spar vertically beside this rope, about halfway between the anchorage and the load. This spar may be a pipe or a pole, but in either case it should have as large a diameter as possible. Make a loop in the rope and wrap it partly around the spar. Insert the end of a horizontal rod through this loop. The horizontal rod should be a stout pipe or bar long enough to provide leverage. It is used as a lever to turn the vertical spar. As the vertical spar turns, the rope is wound around it, which shortens the line and pulls on the load. Make sure that the rope leaving the vertical spar is close to the same level on both sides to prevent the spar from tipping over.

Calibrated chain is required for use with anchor windlasses. There are many different calibrations of chain around the world, all different in size. It is critical that the chain selected is properly matched to the gipsy of the windlass. Our short link calibrated chain fits Simpson Lawrence gipsies as well as others. Made of low carbon content mild steel, it is electrically welded for high strength and then hot dip galvanised to minimise corrosion. Calibration ensures even pitch and also pre-stresses the chain to beyond normal service loads.
