In modern architectural design, the desire for large glass areas in the exterior wall has stimulated the use of prefabricated panels in curtain wall that are simply building skins with no load-bearing characteristics. Extruded aluminum or steel sections(called mullions) similar to I beams are placed over the frame. Between these mullions, windows and spandrel panels of aluminum, structural glass, marble, or precast concrete are attached. Sphelar cells are solidified silicon drops measuring 1. 8 mm in diameter and are highly transparent, which is advantageous for a number of reasons. 2, record 16, French, - cellule%20photovolta%C3%AFque%20sph%C3%A9rique

Gaskets for Glazing. Structural gaskets, made of preformed and cured elastomeric materials, may be used instead of sash for some applications to hold glass in places. Gaskets are extruded in a single strip, molded into the shape of the window perimeter and installed against the glass and window frames. A continuous locking strip of harder elastomer is then forced into one side of the gasket as a final sealing component. Fit and compression of the gasket determine weathertightness. With proper installation, calking is not ordinarily required; but should it be necessary, sealants are available that are compatible with the material of which the gasket is made.

Bomb blast net curtains were invented by the British during World War II for reducing the glass hazard associated with explosion incidents. They consist of translucent Kevlar curtains that are longer and wider than the window and have weights at the bottom. The excess curtain length is placed into a box at the base of the window. When an explosion occurs, the curtains billow out, permitting the air-blast to pass through, but capturing a significant portion of the glass fragments. The British often augment this with 4 mil film coating with blast curtains to provide an effective glass hazard mitigation design for annealed glass windows. 3, record 44, English, - glass%20hazard%20mitigation

The primary window consideration is its insulating-glass spacer-with traditional highly conductive metal spacers, which leads to lower perimeter edge temperatures. Convection currents further concentrate cold air along the bottom edge of glass, making that area the most vulnerable. Only a warmer edge, all the way around, will strike at the heart of the problem. The world's warmest edge occurs with ENER-SAVE Window's Super Spacer, an insulating white foam spacer whose use allows for comfortable household humidity levels and the least likelihood of mold and other problems. 1, record 45, English, - insulating%2Dglass%20spacer

The space between the panes of glass can be filled with gases that insulate better than air. Argon, sulfur hexafluoride, and krypton are among the gases that have been used for this purpose. Gas fills add little to the cost of most windows, and have proven most effective when used in conjunction with low-E coatings. For these reasons, some manufacturers have made gas fills standard in their low-E windows. The window can view 39. 5 degrees forward along the axis of the Station, 32. 2 degrees aft, and a total of 79. 1 degrees from port to starboard. The window is constructed of four panes. The outermost pane, made of fused silica, is designed to withstand orbital debris and can be changed out by extravehicular activity(EVA) if it becomes damaged. The two center panes, also made of fused silica, are the primary and redundant pressure panes. The interior pane, made of glass laminate, is called the scratch or "kick" pane. In the summer of 1994 NASA approved adding an optical-quality nadir-viewing window to the U. S. Laboratory Module of the International Space Station. The window can view 39. 5 degrees forward along the axis of the ISS, 32. 2 degrees aft, and a total of 79. 1 degrees from port to starboard. The window is constructed of three panes of fused silica and a fourth protective kick pane made of glass laminate. From outboard to inboard, the panes are : OUTBOARD-An external debris pane that can be changed by an EVA astronaut if damaged. A redundant pressure pane. A primary pressure pane. A scratch or "kick" pane that protects the primary pressure pane from being damaged if the crew or equipment make contact with the window [and] provides a UV-IR coating to protect the crew members. INBOARD-The kick pane is removed during window research operations to take advantage of the full spectrum of radiation that passes through the fused silica panes. When not in use, the window is protected by the kick pane on the inside, and by an external cover on the outside. The external cover can be rotated in or out of position from within the cabin by an astronaut using a hand crank. 2, record 52, English, - external%20debris%20pane

The material most commonly chosen for insulating around windows is injected foam. Injected foam has the advantage of providing good thermal resistance and resistance to the passage of air and water vapour, thus allowing installation in one stage using a single product... However, the foam has to be applied with great care, because the pressure created by overfilling may distort the frame and cause the window to jam or the glass to break. Care must also be taken to ensure that the foam used is compatible with the materials with which it is in contact, such as the window frame and caulking products. 1, record 56, English, - injected%20foam

1, record 56, French, - mousse%20%C3%A0%20injecter
